ETSU volleyball set to host Buccaneer Classic presented by Holiday Inn

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (September 8, 2010) - After winning the tournament title at the Radford Tournament over the weekend, the ETSU volleyball team returns home as they play host to the Buccaneer Classic Presented by Holiday Inn on Friday and Saturday inside Brooks Gym.
The tournament features in-state rival Austin Peay, former SoCon rival UNC Greensboro, and longtime rival UNC Asheville. Tickets for the event will be $5 per session. Fans who are unable to attend may watch the game via live video at ASun.TV.
The Bucs are riding a three game winning streak and are coming off their first tournament title since 2001 when they won the Winthrop Invitational.
ETSU will take on in-state rival Austin Peay on Friday night at 7 p.m. The Lady Govs enter the weekend with a solid 6-1 overall record. They are currently in the middle of a five match winning streak after dropping their second match of the season to Mississippi State. Austin Peay is led by Nikki Doyle as she is averaging 3.88 kills per set and is hitting .230. ETSU and Austin Peay have only faced each other twice in volleyball with each team winning one match apiece. Austin Peay won the last meeting all the way back in 1993.
The Bucs will then take on former Southern Conference rival UNC Greensboro on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. UNCG comes into the tournament with a 7-1 record. They finished with a perfect 4-0 mark in their season opening tournament at Norfolk State. The Spartans are led by Olivia Humphries as she is averaging 2.40 kills per set and is hitting at a .298 clip. ETSU and UNCG have faced each other 19 times overall with the Bucs leading the series 12-7. The teams last faced each other in 2006 with ETSU earning a 3-0 victory.
In the nightcap on Saturday, ETSU will take on longtime rival UNC Asheville. The Bulldogs enter the weekend with a 4-3 overall record. They are coming off a 2-1 record at the South Alabama Tournament. The Bulldogs are led by Kelsey Benorden as she is averaging 4.24 kills per set and is hitting .257 hitting for the year. She also is coming in with 3.56 digs per set. The two teams have faced each other 40 times over the years, with each team winning 20 apiece. The Bucs tied up the series last year after defeating UNCA, 3-2 in Asheville.
ETSU opened the Radford Tournament with a tough 3-2 victory over Canisius on Friday evening. ETSU middle blocker Jamie Stancliff (Advance, N.C.) came up big all weekend but turned in a career performance on the opening night. She tied a career high with 13 kills in helping the Bucs earn the tight victory.
On Saturday, the Bucs earned another back and forth 3-2 victory over Davidson. Alysa Long (Romulus, Mich.) and Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) led the ETSU offense with 11 kills apiece. Long also led the way with seven blocks, while Devine added nine digs. Kiley Tamblyn (Torrance, Calif.) paced the Bucs defensively with 17 digs. Whitney Cogburn (Kingsport, Tenn.) finished with 43 assists, four kills, five aces, four blocks and two digs. Stancliff also came in with ten kills, her second consecutive match with double-digit kills.
The Bucs closed the tournament with a quick 3-0 victory over Norfolk State to finish the event with a perfect record. Devine led the Bucs offensively once again as she recorded a game-high seven kills to go along with five digs and four blocks. Cogburndished out a game-high 19 assists. Lauren Baufield (Plymouth, Minn.) led the way defensively with eight digs while also adding four service aces to tie a game high with Stancliff.
The impressive play of Stancliff earned her tournament MVP honors while Cogburnwas named to the all-tournament team after a solid performance as well. This is the second consecutive tournament that Cogburn has been named to an all-tournament team. She earned all-tournament honors last week at the season opening Deacon Invitational. The player of the week honor given to Stancliff was the first of her career and is the first for the Bucs since Amanda Youell won the award in September of 2007.
