BUIES CREEK, N.C. (Oct. 1, 2010) -
The ETSU volleyball team went on the road and swept Campbell 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-22) in the A-Sun opener, Friday night inside the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center.
With the victory, the Bucs improved their record to 15-5 (1-0 A-Sun), while Campbell fell to 6-12 (1-1 A-Sun). Additionally, the Bucs have now won seven matches in a row and 12 of their last 13.
"Getting that first conference win on the road is extremely important," said ETSU head coach Lindsey Devine. With the new single round robin format every match is crucial and the team reinforced their hard work with a big victory tonight."
Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) led the way for the Bucs offensively as she recorded a double-double that included 11 kills and 11 digs. Erin Ryan (Davie, Fla.) was one kill away from a double-double as she recorded nine kills and 11 digs. Alysa Long (Romulus, Mich.) also recorded eight kills and two blocks for the Bucs.
Whitney Cogburn (Kingsport, Tenn.) dished out a game-high 35 assists, while also tagging two kills, two service aces, and six digs.
Kiley Tamblyn (Torrance, Calif.) led the defensive efforts with a game-high 23 digs on the evening.
"All year Kiley continues to keep us in the game and she is a player who sacrifices so much for the team and sometimes we take her for granted, but she is such a key element to our success up to this point and tonight with those 23 digs."
ETSU outhit Campbell .254-.176 in the match, while also out-blocking the Camels 6.0-3.0.
The opening set started out with both teams trading points until the score was tied 11-11. Then, following a Jamie Stancliff (Advance, N.C.) kill, the Bucs went on a 5-0 run that was aided by two Cogburn service aces, to take a 16-11 lead. The Bucs had set point as they extended their lead to nine at 24-15. A Ryan kill closed out the set for the Bucs 25-17. Ryan led the way for the Bucs in the set with three kills and five digs.
"I thought Erin Ryan came out and really did a good job of setting the tone for the offense in the first set."
With ETSU up a set, the second frame started very similar to the first as both teams traded points for much of the set. With the match tied at 18 apiece, ETSU reeled off three straight points to take the 21-18 lead. Campbell cut the lead to two but that was as close as the set would get as the Bucs closed the frame with a Devine kill. Ryan continued her strong start to the match by recording five kills in the set. Stancliff also aided the Bucs in the set with two kills and a timely block.
"In set two Jamie really did a great job at the net and created many scoring opportunities for the team."
The Bucs jumped out to a quick start in the third frame and were in control for much of the set. However, with ETSU in front 23-18, Campbell rallied for a 4-0 run that cut the lead to 23-22. ETSU responded with a Devine kill and then a Campbell attack error closed out the set and match. Long came up big in the set as she recorded five of her eight kills, while also adding a solo block.
"In set three, Alysa came alive and continued to show why she is such a key player in our offense."
Emily Werner paced the Campbell offense as she recorded a game-high 15 kills on .263 hitting.
With the victory, ETSU has now shut out Campbell in each of the three fall sports (men's soccer, women's soccer, volleyball). The Bucs have outscored the Camels a combined 9-0 in the three sports.
The Bucs return to action next Friday as they will welcome A-Sun foe Lipscomb to Brooks Gym for a 7 p.m. start.
