Lipscomb volleyball knocks off ETSU 3-0

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 8, 2010) -
Alex Kelly recorded a game-high 17 kills to lead the Lipscomb volleyball team past ETSU 3-0 (17-25, 21-25, 23-25) on Friday night in Atlantic Sun Conference action at Brooks Gym.
With the victory, Lipscomb moves to 14-5 on the season and remains unbeaten in A-Sun play with a perfect 3-0 mark. ETSU falls to 15-6 overall and 1-1 in the A-Sun.
Kelly, the two-time Atlantic Sun player of the year also finished the match with nine digs and two service aces. Jake Pease finished with a game-high 33 assists to lead the Lipscomb offense.
Lipscomb finished the match with a .208 attack percentage, while limiting ETSU to just .085. The Bucs did however out-block the Bisons 5.0-3.0 and they have now out-blocked their opponents in 15 matches this season.
ETSU freshman outside hitter Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) led the Bucs offensively with eight kills, while also adding nine digs. Whitney Cogburn (Kingsport, Tenn.) quarterbacked the Bucs with 24 assists, while also finishing with four kills, five digs, and two blocks. Kiley Tamblyn (Torrance, Calif.) led the defensive efforts with a game-high 12 digs.
The Bisons jumped out early in the opening set and controlled it through much of the frame as they held on for a 25-17 victory. They finished the set with a .458-.194 advantage in hitting.
ETSU came out strong in the second set as they jumped out to a quick lead. With ETSU up 12-9, Jamie Stancliff (Advance, N.C.) and McKayla Barber (Columbus, Ind.) provided the Bucs with a timely block to put them up by four, their largest of the match. However, the Bisons went on a 6-1 run to take the lead at 15-14. A Stephanie Rex service ace put Lipscomb up for good at 18-17 as they closed out the set with a 25-21 victory.
Lipscomb got out to a quick start in the third frame as they took a 10-5 lead. The Bucs, however, quickly roared back as they went on an impressive 11-2 run to take a 16-12 advantage. With ETSU up 21-19, Lipscomb reeled off five straight points to take over the lead at 24-21. Then, with Lipscomb up 24-23, Kaycee Green provided the Bisons with a kill to close out the set and match 25-23.
ETSU returns to action tomorrow as they host A-Sun foe Belmont at 2 p.m. inside Brooks Gym. All volleyball players 12 and under receive free admission.
