Volleyball sweeps Presbyterian 3-0 to earn 20th win of the season

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 23, 2010) -
The ETSU volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-23) sweep of Presbyterian in non-conference volleyball action at Brooks Gym, Saturday afternoon.
ETSU moves to 20-6 (4-1 A-Sun) with the victory, while Presbyterian falls to 10-14 (3-6 Big South) with the loss. The Bucs finished the match with a .316 attack percentage while limiting the Blue Hose to a .206 efficiency on the afternoon. The Bucs have now recorded 20 wins for the first time since 2006 and are currently in the middle of a five match winning streak. The .316 attack efficiency was their second best total of the season.

Freshman outside hitter Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) led the way for the Bucs with 11 kills on the afternoon, while also adding six digs and a service ace. Erin Ryan (Davie, Fla.) recorded 10 kills and three digs for the Bucs.
 Alysa Long (Romulus, Mich.) was extremely efficient on the afternoon as she recorded seven kills on nine attempts with no errors for a .778 hitting efficiency. Long also recorded a game-high seven blocks for the Bucs. Whitney Cogburn (Kingsport, Tenn.) racked up 25 assists while Kiley Tamblyn (Torrance, Fla.) had a game-high 17 digs to lead the ETSU defense. Freshman Nici DeVries (Orangeville, Ill.) provided a spark off the bench with a season-high 11 assists, while adding two service aces.
The Bucs jumped out to a fast start by taking a 15-8 lead in the opening set. Presbyterian then made a run of their own to pull within two at 15-13. The Bucs extended their lead after taking the next four points. After Presbyterian cut the lead to two at 23-21, ETSU took the set thanks to kills from Devine and Ryan. The Bucs hit .333 in the set, while limiting Presbyterian to a .162 efficiency.
ETSU got off to a quick start in the second set as well, taking a 6-2 lead. Presbyterian quickly responded by taking the next four points to tie up the match. The two teams traded points until the score was tied at 13-13. Then, the Bucs reeled off four straight points to take the 17-13 lead. ETSU remained in control and eventually closed out the set thanks to back-to-back kills by Long and Lauren Baufield (Plymouth, Minn.). Long was impressive in the second set as she recorded four kills on four attempts, while also adding five blocks.
The third set started with both teams trading points until a Carolyn Fabros service error put the Bucs on top 17-16. Then, DeVries recorded a service ace to force a Presbyterian timeout. The Blue Hose rallied to tie the score at 23, but the Bucs got two straight kills from Ryan and freshman Summer Kremer (Mills River, N.C.) to close the set and match.
Presbyterian was led by Presley Mabrey on the offensive end as she recorded a game-high 18 kills, while also adding five digs.
The Bucs close out non-conference play on Wednesday as they travel to Cullowhee, N.C. to take on Western Carolina. The match is set for 7 p.m.
