JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 27, 2010) - In an effort to raise awareness and money for the world's most common cause of cancer death in women, the ETSU volleyball team kicks off its annual "Dig for the Cure" campaign this week as the Bucs prepare to host Stetson on Friday at 7 p.m. in Brooks Gym. ETSU will then host Senior Day on Saturday against Florida Gulf Coast at 2 p.m.
The Bucs (21-6, 4-1 A-Sun) are coming off their sixth straight victory after they defeated longtime rival Western Carolina on Wednesday night. ETSU has won their last 12 sets and have won 13 of their last 14 matches overall. The trio of Lauren Baufield (Plymouth, Minn.), Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.), and Summer Kremer (Mills River, N.C.) led the way for the Bucs offensively with seven kills each in the victory over the Catamounts.
The month-long campaign will help to raise money for breast cancer awareness through the Mountain States Health Alliance Breast Cancer Foundation. The team has already taken donations throughout the month of October, which has been designated Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with the proceeds of the campaign going directly to the MSHA Foundation.
The "Dig for the Cure" campaign was originally started in 2003 by Charlotte head coach Lisa Marston, whose mother was a breast cancer survivor, and has spread to volleyball programs across the country in recent years.
As part of the ETSU campaign, against Stetson, admission is only a BUC ($1) for any fan wearing pink. In addition, the Bucs will warm up in specially designed pink shirts. ETSU will also be collecting donations inside Brooks Gym during the match.
Stetson (1-21, 0-6 A-Sun) enters the weekend following a 3-1 loss against Seattle last Saturday. Kaley Melville leads the Stetson offense with 189 kills (2.39 kps) on the season. Kelli Carneal is tops on the squad with 7.57 assists per set, while also recording nearly a kill per set. Monique Russell leads the team on the defensive end with 4.53 digs per set.
Friday night's match will mark the 10th all-time meeting between the two schools with ETSU owning a perfect 9-0 record against the Hatters. Last season, the Bucs defeated Stetson 3-0 in each of the two meetings.
On Saturday, ETSU will host Senior Day for their six seniors against Florida Gulf Coast (4-15, 1-4 A-Sun). The Eagles have dropped their last three matches, including matches against Kennesaw State and Mercer at home two weeks ago. FGCU will take on USC Upstate Friday night before traveling to Johnson City.
ETSU and Florida Gulf Coast will meet for the sixth time, with Florida Gulf Coast winning each of the five matchups. The FGCU trio of Jessica Barnes, Brittany Muse, and Adrianne McNally lead the way for the Eagles offensively with each averaging over two kills per set. Camil Dominguez dishes out nine assists per set, while Holly Youngquist leads the FGCU defensive efforts with 4.41 digs per set.
