JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (June 21, 2012) – ETSU 10th year head volleyball coach Lindsey Devine announced the 2012 schedule on Thursday. The Bucs will play 33 total matches including 13 at home, 18 Atlantic Sun matches and three preseason tournaments.
The 2012 campaign gets underway when the Bucs battle UNC Asheville on Aug. 24, at 10 a.m., in the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, S.C. ETSU then plays Temple later that day, before wrapping up the event against Akron and tournament host South Carolina on Saturday, Aug. 25.
ETSU remains on the road for a single non-conference match against Presbyterian on Aug. 28 at 6 p.m. The Bucs continue their swing through the Palmetto State when they participate in the Clemson Classic, Aug. 31 – Sept. 1. The Blue and Gold will open the tournament against longtime rival Chattanooga on Aug. 31 at 4 p.m. The following day the Bucs will face Charlotte at 12:30 p.m. before closing out the event against tournament host Clemson at 4 p.m.
The Bucs open the home portion of their schedule on Sept. 4 when they host Conference USA opponent Marshall at 7 p.m. inside Brooks Gym.
ETSU returns to tournament play when it travels to Tuscaloosa, Ala. for the Hampton Inn Bama Bash Sept. 7-8. The Bucs will take on Alabama State and Austin Peay during the opening day before facing Lamar and tournament host Alabama on the event’s final day.
The Bucs return home to face longtime rival Western Carolina on Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. in preparation for their first conference match just a week later.
On Sept. 18, ETSU will travel to Mercer to open up Atlantic Sun play at 6 p.m. The A-Sun schedule will expand to 18 matches this season, up from 13 in 2011 and 10 in 2010. In the new format, each team will have a home-and-home series with one another.
The Bucs will then host USC Upstate in the first home conference matchup of the season on Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. inside Brooks Gym.
After visiting the Sunshine State to face Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson on back-to-back nights (Sep. 28-29), the Bucs return home for a six-match homestand beginning with North Carolina A&T on Oct. 2. Just three nights later, ETSU will welcome in new Atlantic Sun member Northern Kentucky to Johnson City for the first time. The homestand will include three-time defending A-Sun champion Lipscomb the very next day as well as Mercer (Oct. 9), Jacksonville (Oct. 12) and North Florida (Oct. 13).
Following the long homestand, ETSU will hit the road for its longest conference road swing of the season with four straight matches away from Johnson City. The road swing begins at Kennesaw State on Oct. 16 and USC Upstate on Oct. 19. The Bucs will close out the four straight road matches at Lipscomb and Northern Kentucky on back-to-back nights Oct. 26-27.
The Bucs will close out the home portion of the schedule with four straight matches beginning with the final non-conference match of the season against Gardner-Webb on October 30. ETSU will then host Florida Gulf Coast (Nov. 2) and Stetson (Nov. 3) before hosting Kennesaw State on Nov. 6 for the final home match of the year.
ETSU will wrap up the regular season with a trip to Jacksonville, Fla. to face conference foes North Florida and Jacksonville on Nov. 9 and Nov. 10.
The 2012 Atlantic Sun Championship will be held Nov. 15-17 at Allen Arena on the campus of Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn. for the second straight year. The top six teams in the league standings will compete in the event. The Bucs advanced to the A-Sun finals in 2010 and reached the semifinals in 2011.
