During her time coaching the USA Girls’ Youth National Team in the European Global Challenge, head ETSU volleyball coach Lindsey Devine will be blogging about her experience on the trip.
Below is Coach Devine’s first post of the trip (Wednesday, July 11)
Finally the day has come for the start of the 10-day Youth National Volleyball Global Challenge Tour. After boarding the plane at JFK our first stop was Paris, France. The six hour plane trip was filled with Tia Scambray enjoying five tapioca puddings, while the rest of the team either slept or watched the movie – The Hunger Games. We had a quick change of planes in Paris and then it was back up in the sky to Venice, Italy where our tour guides, Federica and Mauro greeted us.
From there, it was time to grab our luggage and make the way to our first training session. Following practice, we headed back to the hotel for lunch… have to love the Italian food! Pasta, prosciutto, and salad.
Then it was time to rest.
After a little nap it was time to load the vans and head to our first match versus the Italian Youth Team. This was an eye-opening introduction to the international game. Despite losing the first set, and leading in both sets 2 and 3, the team lost the match, 0-3 (5-25, 22-25, 26-28).
Following the match, we ate some Italian pizza and climbed into bed.
