Pregame cookout scheduled for 5:45 outside Brooks Gym

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 2, 2012) – Fresh off a successful season-opening eight-game road swing, the ETSU volleyball team returns home for the first time in 2012 when the Bucs host Marshall on Monday night inside Brooks Gym. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m., while a pregame cookout will take place outside Brooks Gym beginning at 5:45 p.m.

ETSU is coming off a second-place showing at the Clemson Classic this past weekend where the Blue and Gold defeated Chattanooga (3-0) and Charlotte (3-1), but suffered a 3-0 setback to the Tigers in the championship match. Sophomores Bethany Gesell (High Point, N.C.) and Meredith Hardy (Kingsport, Tenn.) were both named to the all-tournament team, while junior Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) moved closer to reaching a special milestone. Devine enters Monday’s match with the Thundering Herd 14 kills shy of reaching career number 1,000. Meanwhile, Hardy continued her streak of recording a block in 34 consecutive matches this weekend after finishing play with 30 kills and 14 total blocks in the 10 sets played. Gesell was clutch with her hitting as she generated a .528 attack percentage in the first two matches on the weekend. The High Point, N.C. native collected 21 kills on 36 attempts with only two errors against Chattanooga and Charlotte.

Through its first eight matches, ETSU has been dominating its opponents on the stat sheet. The Bucs are plus-22 in kills (381-359), plus-12 in service aces (47-35), and plus-25 in blocks (85-60). Also, the Blue and Gold have committed 25 less attack errors than the opposition.

After winning the Thunder Invitational last weekend, Marshall suffered three straight losses this weekend to move to 3-3 on the year. The Thundering Herd were swept by Samford, Louisville and Duke in Louisville, Ky.

Marshall is led by junior outside hitter Laura Der’s 48 kills (3.43 per set), while senior Katy Schad leads the Thundering Herd with 3.32 digs per set. Meanwhile, sophomore Sammie Bane was named Conference USA Setter of the Week on Aug. 27 after she guided Marshall to the Thunder Invitational title as she accounted for 10.46 assists per set and a team hitting percentage of .225. She also produced a pair of double-doubles on the weekend as she recorded 46 assists and 17 digs against IUPUI followed by 53 assists and 10 digs in the match against Miami (Ohio).

As a team, Marshall is averaging 10.7 kills and 1.14 blocks per set. Freshman middle blocker enters Monday’s match with a team-leading 16 blocks on the season.

The Bucs and Thundering Herd have some history dating back to the days in the SoCon as Monday marks the 34th meeting between the two programs. ETSU leads the all-time series, 21-12.
