JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 20, 2012) – Coming off its conference-opening setback at Mercer earlier in the week, the ETSU volleyball team looks to bounce back into the win column when the Bucs host USC Upstate on Friday night. First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside Brooks Gym.

The Bucs (9-6, 0-1 A-Sun) dropped a heartbreaker in the opening set to the Bears Tuesday night inside Hawkins Arena and never recovered, as Mercer took the second and third sets to kick off Atlantic Sun play. ETSU was led by junior Megan Devine’s (Kingsport, Tenn.) 12-kill, 9-dig effort, while senior Kayla Williams (El Paso, Texas) added 28 assists, three digs, and two blocks. Unfortunately, as a team, the Bucs hit .141 (31-17-99) for the match, compared to Mercer’s .270 (46-16-111) clip. The Blue and Gold were also outdone in service aces and the Bears won the battle, 7-1.

Like ETSU, USC Upstate (4-7, 0-1 A-Sun) suffered a loss in its first conference match of the season as the Spartans dropped a four-setter at Kennesaw State Tuesday night. Three players recorded double-digit kills in the match with Kayla McAvoy leading the way at 16. McAvoy also hit .545 for the match and recorded five blocks, but the team couldn’t overcome Kennesaw State’s 76 kills. The Spartans ended with 55.

McAvoy leads the team with a .323 attack percentage and 3.53 kills per set, placing her third and fifth in the A-Sun. Emily Bingham also ranks among the conference leaders in attack percentage as her .299 clip is the sixth best among league players.

Since joining the A-Sun in 2005, the Bucs have won six of the eight matches against the Spartans, including three straight. Devine and Ivey Rice (Johnson City, Tenn.) both recorded double-doubles in the last meeting with USC Upstate as ETSU defeated the Spartans, 3-1, back on Nov. 5, 2011 in Spartanburg. Devine finished with 18 kills and 18 digs, while Rice added 13 kills and 19 digs. The Bucs out-blocked USC Upstate, 10-2, and also held the Spartans to a .176 attack percentage. In Johnson City, ETSU swept the Spartans as Jamie Rutledge (Kingsport, Tenn.) posted 35 assists and seven digs, while Meredith Hardy (Kingsport, Tenn.) hit .500 (9-1-16) and added three service aces.

Fans unable to make the trip to Johnson City can watch all the action for free through A-Sun.TV, while live stats will also be available on ETSUBucs.com. Fans can also access the live stats on their mobile devices by visiting ETSUBucs.com.
