SPARTANBURG S.C. (Aug. 20, 2014) – The Southern Conference Volleyball Preseason Coaches’ Poll was released on Wednesday and ETSU was picked to finish third, while senior middle blocker Meredith Hardy (Kingsport, Tenn.) landed preseason all-conference honors.
The Bucs, who are coming off a 22-win campaign in 2013 and return 12 players from their conference championship squad, received 49 total points. Samford, last year’s SoCon runner-up, was picked to win the league and received 62 points (seven first-place votes) and Furman was selected second with 56 points (two first-place votes). UNCG (37 points) and Chattanooga (36 points) rounded out the top five.
After claiming All-Atlantic Sun honors the last two seasons, Hardy was placed on the eight-player preseason all-conference team. Hardy, who owns the A-Sun all-time blocks record (474) and ETSU’s all-time block assists (404) mark, has also recorded at least one block in 91 consecutive matches. The Kingsport, Tenn. native ranked 10th nationally in blocks per set (1.52) last season and led the A-Sun in blocks the last two years. To along with her blocking numbers, Hardy has also registered 950 kills in 96 career matches.
Joining Hardy on the preseason all-conference list were Samford’s Michaela Reesor and Chelsi Carter, Western Carolina’s Jordan Timmerman and Addy George, Furman’s Ashton Gregory and Jo Wilks, and Wofford’s Taylor Baird.
The Bucs rejoined the Southern Conference on July 1, 2014 after spending the last nine seasons in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
The ETSU volleyball team opens the 2014 season on Aug. 29 when the Bucs take on Morgan State and Sacramento State at the Charlotte Invitational.
