This is the Bucs’ first match at home until the regular season on Sept. 19

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (August 18, 2017) – The ETSU volleyball team will host the Charlotte 49ers to kick off their 2017 season. The scrimmage is set for this Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in Brooks Gym.

LAST TIME OUT: A new season for the Bucs brings excitement. The Bucs finished the 2016 season going 22-8 overall, while remaining undefeated at home. They were regular season champs, but fell to Samford in the Southern Conference Tournament.

SERIES HISTORY:  The last time both teams met was in 2014 and Charlotte edged the Bucs 3-1. Throughout their history, the Bucs hold a 10-9 overall record against the 49ers.

A LOOK AT ETSU: ETSU returns a wealth of their starting players including the 2017 Preseason All-SoCon selections, AJ Lux (Shelbyville, Ind.) and Rylee Milhorn (Kingsport, Tenn.). They return strength to their lineup with middle blockers, Mariah McPartland (Boone, Iowa), Braedyn Tutton (Courtice, Ontario), and Kaela Massey (Brentwood, Tenn.). Setter, Alyssa Kvarta (Crown Point, Ind.) returns to the Bucs’ starting lineup, with the addition of freshman Lexie Libs (Clarksville, Ind.). Hailey Aguilar (Chicago, Ill.) and Aya Lechin (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) will control the defensive side of play for the Bucs. Both are experienced and will contribute greatly. Rounding out the team are three newcomers; sophomore transfer Leah Clayton (Danville, Va.), Kalee Vanderhorst (Raleigh, N.C.), and Alex Sherles (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) who will add depth as outside hitters.

A LOOK AT CHARLOTTE: Last season the 49ers had a 7-23 overall record. Charlotte returns 14 and adds three freshmen to their roster this year. Sophomores Molly Shaw and Jocelyn Stoner led the 49ers in kills last season, while Sofie Perrens and Mackenzie Reaume also return as strong setters. Defensively, the 49ers lost their top two leaders for digs, so their newcomers will have to fill that role. Jocelyn Stoner recorded 102 blocks last season, while Tatyana Thomas finished with 71.
