NASHVILLE, Tenn. (August 25, 2017) – Despite a .417 hitting percentage by AJ Lux (Shelbyville, Ind.), the Bucs dropped their first match of the season to Lipscomb 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25017) at the LUV Invitational on Friday night. Lux finished with six kills and only had just one attacking error, while Alyssa Kvarta (Crown Point, Ind.) finished with the team-high of 15 assists.
Coach's take: “Lipscomb is a very good team. They have a mental toughness that can wear teams down. We demonstrated moments of that, but we have room to grow and we can learn from this. We battled within ourselves, but we weren’t able to consistently string points together. Lipscomb hit the ball hard and they were relentless throughout each set. Being in this opportunity will hopefully impact our players. It can show them what we can be and that we need to be a little more mentally tough and aggressive.”
Set 1: It was a tight battle between both teams until the Bisons pulled away 21-16. There were six ties throughout the first set and four different lead changes. Freshman Lexie Libs (Clarksville, Ind.) recorded her first career kill. She finished the match with two kills and seven assists. AJ Lux finished the first set with two kills, as the team finished with five kills. The Bucs did out-block the Bisons in the first set 4-1. Mariah McPartand (Boone, Iowa) led the Bucs with three block assists. Rylee Milhorn (Kingsport, Tenn.), Kalee Vanderhorst (Raleigh, N.C.) all assisted with McPartland’s blocks as well.
Set 2: The Bucs were able to get the first point of the set off a service error on Lipscomb. Senior outside hitter Rylee Milhorn led the Bucs with three kills. ETSU had their closest set despite the 25-22 loss. It was once again a back and forth match as there were four ties throughout the set. Leah Clayton (Danville, Va.) and Rylee Milhorn led the Bucs with four kills apiece. Alyssa Kvarta and Hailey Aguilar (Chicago, Ill.) each had two digs apiece as well. The Bucs finished the set with their highest hitting percentage of .348.
Set 3: Lipscomb was relentless with their kills as they finished set three with 22 kills. Mariah McPartland and AJ Lux were able to team together to block one of the Bisons’ attacks. Milhorn led the team with four digs, while Clayton had three kills. ETSU committed less errors than Lipscomb did throughout the match.
