NASHVILLE, Tenn. (August 26, 2017) – ETSU volleyball played topped ranked teams throughout the weekend at the LUV Invitational in Nashville, Tenn. The Bucs first took on No. 24 ranked Arizona. After pushing four sets, the Bucs lost 3-1 (26-24, 19-25, 23-25, and 20-25). Later in the evening, the Bucs faced Wichita State and fell 3-0 (17-25, 16-25, 21-25).
Coach’s take vs. Arizona: “After refocusing, we were a different team today. We had a strong fight that exuded in the Arizona match. We had a lot of passion and played together as a team. Our setters did a great of getting our hitters to swing with confidence. Kalee Vanderhorst’s first few kills as a freshman were key. It got her to build confidence and once she kept going she kept getting stronger. Our passing was really good and our setters once again did a good job of creating holes for Kalee. Our middles worked extra hard to help make those kills happen.”
Arizona Recap: ETSU came out strong winning the first set against a very powerful opponent. Freshman Kalee Vanderhorst (Raleigh, N.C.) had a career high of six kills and helped the Bucs win their first set throughout a very close match. Braedyn Tutton (Courtice, Ontario) was impressive on the front line after finishing with a .364 hitting percentage. Setters Alyssa Kvarta (Crown Point, Ind.) and Lexie Libs (Clarksville, Ind.) both had double digit assists. Kvarta finished with 20 assists, and also had two service aces, while Libs had 18 assists. Senior Rylee Milhorn (Kingsport, Tenn.) had a team high of 13 kills, while also registering four service aces, and nine digs. Leah Clayton (Danville, Va.) also put up some great numbers and finished the match with 13 digs, two service aces, and eight kills. AJ Lux (Shelbyville, Ind.) and Kaela Massey (Brentwood, Tenn.) tallied two blocks as well. Hailey Aguilar (Chicago, Ill.) also finished the match with seven assists and 13 digs. As a team, the Bucs had a .375 hitting percentage in the first set and a .324 hitting percentage in the second set. The Bucs hung with Arizona throughout the match as there were ten ties and six different lead changes throughout the fourth set. There were also nine ties in both the second and third set as well.
Coach’s take vs. Wichita State: “Wichita State is a very good team. Every year they go to the NCAA tournament. They make their defense look effortless. We made really great plays and we figured out how to battle against them. It’s a standard that we set for ourselves and now we know what we are capable of and how we can play with that fight.”
Wichita State Recap: After coming up just short in the third set, the Bucs fell to Wichita State in three sets. Leah Clayton was one kill away from finishing with a double-double as she had nine kills and 13 digs. Milhorn also had nine kills and nine digs.
