BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (September 9, 2017) –The ETSU volleyball team put up a great fight in battling back to win a five-set match (24-26, 26-28, 25-19, 26-24, 15-11) over Saint Louis on Saturday afternoon at Diddle Arena in Bowling Green, Ky. After dropping the first two sets by just two points both times, the Bucs never let down and continued to push through the win. It was truly a team effort for the Bucs to come back and win from behind.
Coach's take on the win: "To be down 2-0 and win three straight sets demonstrated the fight I knew our team had. We continued to be aggressive, played hard as a team. We were patient and didn't let the pressure of the moment take away our game."
Coach's take on Milhorn recording her 1,000 kill: "For a player to reach that milestone is a lot of hard work to reach that goal. Rylee set that goal as a freshman and her capability of being such an impact player shows all of the hard work, effort, and passion she's put into this game. I'm really happy for her. She's dedicated a lot to this program in her four years."
Set 1: During the first set, the Bucs fell behind 10-6 before going on a 4-0 run to tie the match at 17. AJ Lux (Shelbyville, Ind.) paced the Bucs with four kills, while freshman Kalee Vanderhorst (Raleigh, N.C.) had three kills. The set continued to be tied at each point leading up to the set point. Lux tied the game at 24 with a kill, but Saint Louis was able to capture two more points to take a 26-24 win.
Set 2: Through 15 ties and eight different lead changes, the Bucs dropped another very close set of 28-26. It was a battle back and forth between both teams. Senior Rylee Milhorn (Kingsport, Tenn.) dominated the set with six kills. Milhorn could not be stopped. Saint Louis again ended the set with an ETSU attack error and a kill.
Set 3: After facing a 0-2 deficit the Bucs came back out to the court with fire and passion. Lux gave the Bucs a strong start with a kill on the first play. The score went back and back four different times, and tied seven times. The Bucs gained momentum with the score at 18-14. From there, they took control to win the set. Braedyn Tutton (Courtice, Ontario) stunned Saint Louis with two blocks. Freshman Lexie Libs (Clarksville, Ind.) ended the set with a kill.
Set 4: It was once again another back and forth set as there were 12 ties and only one lead change. Despite the closeness of the set, the Bucs controlled every point. Milhorn broke out from the front line again with six kills to help her team to the set win.
Set 5: With the match tied 2-2 and the pressure heating up, the Bucs were able to get a 9-4 lead going. From there, they held on to their lead and continued to build to secure the set and match point. Leah Clayton (Danville, Va.) gave ETSU their win with her final kill of the game off an assist from Alyssa Kvarta (Crown Point. Ind.). Lux had three kills in this set, while Clayton and Milhorn each had two.
AJ LUX: Lux tied her career-high of 20 kills throughout this match. She had two sets with five kills, and one with six.
RYLEE MILHORN: Milhorn recorded her 1,000 career kill, while also picking up her second double-double of the season. She had 15 kills, the second highest on the team today, and 17 digs. Milhorn also had a solo block and four service aces.
