This was the Bucs fifth, fourth-set match of the season

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (September 9, 2017) –The Bucs played their last match against Pittsburgh at the Holiday Inn-University Plaza preseason tournament. ETSU played their fifth, fourth-set match of the season in a 3-1 (19-25, 23-22, 21-25, 25-16) loss to Pittsburgh on Saturday evening.

Coach’s Take: “Pitt is a great team. The whole design of our preseason was to put the team in challenging situations. If you take away the scores and just look at the moments, I can tell we’re improving. We are executing and getting better. We’ve been working hard in practice and our moments keep getting longer and longer. By that, I mean we have a much more skilled execution. I’ve been really pleased and proud of this team.”

Key Notes:

Rylee Milhorn (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Leah Clayton (Danville, Va.) both finished with 14 kills each.

Alyssa Kvarta (Crown Point, Ind.) had 20 assists, while Lexie Libs (Clarksville, Ind.) finished with 16.

Marija Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia) finished with a team-high of 18 digs, her highest so far this season.

Braedyn Tutton (Courtice, Ontario) had another team-high of six blocks, while Libs and Mariah McPartland (Boone, Iowa) each had four.

Set 1: The Bucs fell behind early trailing 4-0 to begin the set. ETSU fought back, but Pitt controlled the points. Rylee Milhorn had another impressive match as she had three digs. Marija Popovic was tough on the back line with seven digs.

Set 2: Pitt again took the lead early on. ETSU caught up and tied the match at 14 and took the lead after Leah Clayton smashed the ball over the net to give the Bucs a kill. The Bucs were able to take a 19-16 lead, but were stuck at 22. ETSU’s errors caused Pitt to take the lead and win the set.  Milhorn had two service aces, while Clayton led the team with six kills in the second set.

Set 3: The Bucs pushed a fourth set after winning the third set with a 25-21 score. This was ETSU’s best set of the game as they had a .333 hitting percentage. Milhorn and Clayton each had five kills and continued to hit the ball hard. Popovic also had seven digs in this set as well and continued to stay solid for the Bucs. ETSU gained their biggest lead when the score was 23-20. They got back to back points to win the set as Milhorn ended it with a kill.

Set 4: ETSU took a 3-0 lead to begin the set, but from there Pitt took over and took control of the momentum. The Bucs stayed within a few points of Pitt, but they kept climbing to the point where the Bucs were unable to catch up.

Up Next: The Bucs will play in their last road tournament of the preseason before getting into conference play. They will play Virginia Tech and Radford at the Hokie Invitational next weekend.
