Four Bucs record new personal bests

BLACKSBURG, Va. (September 15, 2017) – After winning the first two sets, the Bucs fell to Radford (25-17, 25-22, 22-25, 17-25, 12-15) in five-sets at the Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg, Va. Senior outside hitter Rylee Milhorn (Kingsport, Tenn.) recorded her third double-double of the season. Milhorn’s 24 kills has set a new personal best. She last had a career-high of 23 kills back in 2015 against Western Carolina.

Setters Alyssa Kvarta (Crown Point, Ind.) and Lexie Libs (Floyds Knobs, Ind.) also recorded a double-double. Kvarta finished with 25 assists and 10 digs, while Libs had 17 assists and 15 digs. This is also Libs’ first career double-double of the season.

Set 1: Despite being tied at 10, the Bucs gained control of the set. From there, ETSU kept building their lead. Milhorn led the set with six kills, while AJ Lux (Shelbyville, Ind.) and Kaela Massey (Brentwood, Tenn.) each had two kills. Marija Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia) had five digs in the set to help the setters give the hitters enough time to place the ball where they wanted.

Set 2: The second match was a back and forth battle. The match was tied multiple times throughout the set as each team continued to fight. As the set neared the end, the Bucs were down by two, 18-20. After a timeout, Radford committed two errors to tie the set, and ETSU took control to win the set 25-22. Leah Clayton (Danville, Va.) secured the set win with her final kill. Milhorn once again led the Bucs with six kills. Clayton and Popovic each had four kills. During this set, the Bucs out-blocked the Highlanders 5-0.

Set 3: The beginning of the set was very close as the set was tied at 11 before ETSU called a timeout. The Bucs took an 18-14 lead, but the Highlanders kept fighting back. They tied the set at 22, but three ETSU errors in a row gave Radford the set win. With a low hitting percentage, the Bucs were unable to produce kills. Milhorn had six kills and four digs, while Popovic had a set-high of eight digs on the back line.

Set 4: Radford took a lead early on as the Bucs fell behind 10-4. Throughout the set the Bucs continued to trail as Radford continued to build the lead. ETSU fought back, but Radford had some long runs. Popovic and Lexie Libs (Floyds Knobs, Ind.) took control of the back line with their defensive digs.

Set 5: The match was tied at four, before Kaela Massey gave the Bucs a lead after a kill. Soon after, ETSU committed three errors in a row that gave Radford the lead. From there, the Bucs could not gain the control back to get ahead.

Despite the loss, the Bucs were able to put up good numbers statistically. As a team, the Bucs out-blocked Radford 13-8. Braedyn Tutton (Courtice, Ontario) recorded a new career-high of eight blocks, while AJ Lux finished with six. Popovic also recorded a new career and season high of 27 digs. Lexie Libs put up a new season high as well with 15 digs.
