CHARLESTON, S.C. (September 30, 2017) – The ETSU volleyball team swept The Citadel Bulldogs 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-21) on Saturday afternoon at the McAlister Field House in Charleston, S.C. The trio of AJ Lux (Shelbyville, Ind.), Leah Clayton (Danville, Va.) and Rylee Milhorn (Kingsport, Tenn.) were dominant for the Bucs. Lux had the team-high of ten kills, while finishing with a .444 hitting percentage. Marija Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia) continued to play tremendous defense with 16 digs, as Alyssa Kvarta (Crown Point, Ind.) finished with the only ETSU double-double with 18 assists and ten digs. As a team, the Bucs had nine service aces and a .262 hitting percentage to finish the match.
Set 1: The set began with a double hit by The Citadel to give the Bucs a quick point right from the beginning. The Citadel answered back with two kills, but the Bucs went on a 4-0 run to give them a 7-2 lead. Leah Clayton chipped in a kill and a service ace, while Rylee Milhorn was swinging long and gave the Bucs a kill that The Citadel just could not get to. Braedyn Tutton (Courtice, Ontario) picked up where she left off last night hammering the ball over the net in the middle. The Bulldogs were able to come up with two kills, but Milhorn stopped that right away with a kill. AJ Lux picked up her first kill of the set to make the score 10-5. The Citadel had spurts of errors that only helped the Bucs continue to build. Mariah McPartland (Boone, Iowa) and Kalee Vanderhorst (Raleigh, N.C.) came up with a big block for the Bucs. Vanderhorst kept her momentum going with her first kill of the set. Three ETSU kills in a row gave the Bucs a 21-9 lead. Lux went on a role nearing the end of the set as she was swinging too hard for The Citadel to handle. Lux ended the set with a tip over the net in the middle of the court to secure the 25-11 win.
Set 2: An error by the Bulldogs and a kill by Milhorn gave the Bucs a 2-0 lead early on. Two more Bulldogs errors put the Bucs up 4-1. The Citadel fought back, but ETSU went a 3-0 run with a kill by Lexie Libs (Floyds Knobs, Ind.), a Milhorn sevice ace, and a McPartland and Clayton block. The Bulldogs kept it close, but ETSU then went on a 2-0 run with Clayton and Tutton kills. The Citadel was within range of one point after some ETSU errors. The Citadel tied the set with a kill, but AJ Lux put the Bucs back on top with another kill. The Bulldogs continued to fight, but back to back kills by Clayton and a 4-0 run put the Bucs ahead 19-16. Tutton gave ETSU a 23-18 lead and Lux put the Bucs within set point. A double hit by the Bulldogs gave the Bucs a 25-21 win.
Set 3: The third set was back and forth action between both teams. Service aces and service errors between both teams seemed to be the cause of the close set. Rylee Milhorn got things going for the Bucs to give them their first lead of the set and continued to give the Bucs points off kills. Sharlissa De Jesus, Moriah Smith and Sarah Dobrich kept fighting back for the Bulldogs to keep the set close. The trio kept producing key kills for the Bulldogs off of long rallies. A 4-0 run helped the Bucs get ahead 20-16. Clayton put the Bucs ahead 23-18. An attack error by The Citadel put the Bucs within set point and AJ Lux once again secured the set and the win for the Bucs with a powerful kill.
Up Next: ETSU has two back to back home matches next week. On Friday, Oct. 7 they will host Mercer and on Saturday, Oct. 8 they will host Samford. Both matches will begin at 8:00 p.m. as part of ETSU’s homecoming festivities.
