Clayton records third double-double

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 27, 2017) –The ETSU volleyball team downed The Citadel in four sets, 3-1 (25-14, 25-21, 16-25, 25-17) on Friday night inside Brooks Gym. Leah Clayton (Danville, Va.) recorded her third double-double of the season with 12 kills and 12 digs. Rylee Milhorn (Kingsport, Tenn.) had the team high of 14 kills, while Alyssa Kvarta (Crown Point, Ind.) had the team high of 26 assists and was one dig short of recording her eighth double-double of the season. Marija Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia) picked up 20 digs and Braedyn Tutton (Courtice, Ontario) led the Bucs with ten blocks.  AJ Lux (Shelbyville, Ind.) had double-digit kills finishing with 11. ETSU out-blocked The Citadel 13-7.

Set 1: The Bucs went on an 11-4 run before The Citadel called a timeout. After returning from the timeout, ETSU had two straight kills from Kaela Massey (Brentwood, Tenn.) and used that momentum en route to a 25-14 set victory. Massey and Clayton each finished with five kills. Milhorn and Lexie Libs (Floyds Knobs, Ind.) each had a service ace, while Libs had six assists in the first set and Kvarta finished with seven assists.

Set 2: After falling behind 0-2 after a couple of attack errors, ETSU rallied back for eight straight points. After The Citadel got as close as 14-9, ETSU pulled away with a 22-14 lead. The Citadel fought back to make it 24-21, but would ultimately fall after Leah Clayton’s fifth and final kill of the set. Alyssa Kvarta paced the Bucs with five assists as Libs pitched in three. Tutton was on a roll with her blocks as she finished the set with four, including two block solos. Clayton had the team high of five kills and eight digs and Popovic finished the second set with seven digs.

Set 3: Each team traded points before The Citadel pulled away from an 8-8 tie to take a 16-10 lead. The Citadel would eventually pull away from an 18-15 lead to take set three and survive for another set. AJ Lux and Milhorn each had four kills apiece. ETSU did not have any blocks during the third set, as the Bulldogs had three. The Citadel’s .516 hitting percentage and 16 kills helped them to their victory.

Set 4: The Bucs rallied back in set four dominating their way to an early 10-3 lead. Before later pulling to a comfortable 21-10 lead, the Bulldogs battled back to 24-17 before Clayton's final kill sealed the deal to capture the match. Milhorn dominated the fourth set with five kills. Kvarta and Popovic each tallied six digs. Lexie Libs had the team high of seven assists in this set and finished the match with 18 assists.
