JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 28, 2017) –The ETSU volleyball team handed Furman their first conference loss of the season in three sets (25-18, 25-16, 25-20) inside Brooks Gym on Saturday afternoon. It was a true team effort by the Bucs and an exciting home court win. Rylee Milhorn (Kingsport, Tenn.) led the Bucs with 14 kills and was one dig short of a double-double. Freshman Lexie Libs (Floyds Knobs, Ind.) had the team high of 20 assists, while Alyssa Kvarta (Crown Point, Ind.) finished the match with 15. Both Libs and Kvarta did a great job distributing the ball across the net throughout the match. In three sets, Marija Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia) had the team high of 28 digs and Braedyn Tutton (Courtice, Ontario) and Kaela Massey (Brentwood, Tenn.) each had four blocks.
Coach’s Take: “Our team was very focused tonight. They followed our game plan pretty consistently and we talked a lot this week about how important it is to trust the process that we’ve been looking at all year. We played with energy and consistency, so it feels great in front of a home crowd. We’re proud of that and there’s still a lot left to the season.”
Set 1: Braedyn Tutton came out firing for the Bucs with two back to back kills to start off the set. Lexie Libs then gave the Bucs a 10-0 run off her serves to put the Bucs ahead 13-3. The Paladins tried to fight back, but setter Alyssa Kvarta went on a 5-0 serve run to put the Bucs ahead 21-15. Popovic finished the set with back to back serves which allowed ETSU to shut down Furman with two blocks in a row to seal the deal. Tutton finished the first set with a .500 hitting percentage with her four kills, while Popovic had 12 digs. As a team, the Bucs had a .227 hitting percentage and had six blocks.
Set 2: The Bucs started off strong again beginning the set with a block by Tutton and Leah Clayton (Danville, Va.). The Bucs went on a few 2-0 runs here and there before Hailey Aguilar (Chicago, Ill.) gave the Bucs three serves in a row to put the Bucs ahead 9-5, followed by Kaela Massey who then went on a 5-0 serve run to put ETSU ahead 14-6. Furman came within three points, but freshman Libs had another seven-point serve run to give ETSU a ten-point lead. Libs finished the set with a kill to allow the Bucs to win 25-16. ETSU once again out-hit and out-dug the Paladins. Milhorn finished with six kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Popovic had eight digs, while Aguilar had five.
Set 3: Leah Clayton and AJ Lux (Shelbyville, Ind.) gave the Bucs back to back kills to start things off. The beginning of the set was a back and forth battle as Furman tied the set multiple times ending with their last tie with the score at 8-8, but ETSU held the lead the rest of the set. Aguilar again went on a serve run, followed by Popovic to keep the Bucs in control. Furman fought back, but Braedyn Tutton ended the match with her kill to hand Furman their first conference loss. AJ Lux finished the third set with three kills and a .750 hitting percentage. Kvarta pitched in four digs and seven assists. Clayton and Milhorn each had four kills.
Up Next: The Bucs will conclude their conference road schedule when they travel to Samford on Nov. 3 and Mercer on Nov. 4.
