SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Nov. 2, 2017) – After earning back-to-back SoCon Defensive Player of the Week awards, freshman libero Marija Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia), has been named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Month, for the month of October.

During October, Popovic recorded a total of 34 assists and 199 digs in eight matches. In each match, she tallied double-digit digs.

“Marija continues to put our team in a great place to score,” said head coach Lindsey Devine. “Her first contact is exactly where the setters need it to run our offense. She has great instincts and thrives in key moments.”

Popovic had six assists in two matches this month. She picked up a new career-high of 32 digs on Oct. 11 against Chattanooga. A few matches after, she then topped her career-high on Oct. 20 against UNCG, when she recorded 34 digs. The same weekend, Popovic tied her career-high of 34 digs against Western Carolina on Oct. 22. This past weekend, she tallied 28 digs and four assists in just a three-set match win over Furman.

She leads the conference in digs, as she records 5.59 digs per set. Popovic and the rest of the Bucs return to action tomorrow, Nov. 3, as they take on Samford.
