ETSU is set to play Clemson, South Carolina, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi  

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Aug. 23, 2018) – The ETSU volleyball team will officially begin their 2018 season as they head to Columbia, S.C. for the Gamecock Invitational. The Bucs will face three opponents; Clemson, South Carolina, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

LAST TIME OUT: ETSU played an exhibition match last weekend to kick off the 2018 season. Alyssa Kvarta (Crown Point, Ind.) anchored the Bucs’ offense, as she finished the match just short of a double-double with 35 assists, nine digs, while also pitching in two kills and two blocks. Leah Clayton (Danville, Va.), AJ Lux (Shelbyville, Ind.), Braedyn Tutton (Courtice, Ontario), and Mariah McPartland (Boone, Iowa) were also impressive with their kills and digs. Hailey Aguilar (Chicago, Ill.) and Marija Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia) also split time on the back row as liberos/defensive specialists.

SERIES HISTORY:

ETSU vs. Clemson: This will be the 8th all-time meeting between the Bucs and the Tigers. ETSU has yet to win a match against Clemson.

ETSU vs. South Carolina: This will be the 5th all-time meeting between the Bucs and the Gamecocks. Both teams share a 2-2 win/loss record.

ETSU vs. Texas A&M CC: This will be the first meeting.

A LOOK AT ETSU: The Bucs return eight key letterwinners from last season, while welcoming five freshmen. ETSU finished 19-12 overall and 12-4 in conference action. Their 3-0 win over Wofford in the SoCon tournament championship match gave the Bucs a trip to the NCAA tournament to take on Kentucky. ETSU’s depth and experience will help them continue to be a top contender not only in the SoCon, but throughout Division I volleyball.  

A LOOK AT CLEMSON: Clemson went 7-25 last season and 2-18 in the ACC. The Tigers were predicted 12th in the ACC Coaches’ Poll. Junior Kaylin Korte was named to the ACC Preseason Poll. She led the Tigers with 349 kills. Clemson is under the leadership of Michaela Franklin, entering her second season.

A LOOK AT SOUTH CAROLINA: South Carolina went 12-18 overall and 5-13 in the SEC. They return 12 letterwinners and only lose two, while welcoming six newcomers. Tom Mendoza is in his first season with Gamecocks. South Carolina finished 12th in the SEC last season.

A LOOK AT TEXAS A&M CORPUS CHRISTI: Texas A&M Corpus Christi finished last season with a record of 15-14, while finishing 11-5 in the Southland Conference. The Islanders finished third last season. Heading into the 2018 season, the Islanders have no seniors and will mostly be led by their 8 freshmen.
