JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 11, 2018) – The Bucs hit the road for two SoCon matches this weekend. ETSU will take on Mercer on Friday, Oct. 12 at 6:00 p.m. before traveling to Charleston, S.C. on Saturday, Oct. 13 to take on The Citadel at 6:00 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: ETSU concluded their non-conference portion of their schedule after hosting High Point in a mid-week matchup. After being down two sets, the Bucs battled back to force a fifth set, but fell to the Panthers 3-2.
ETSU vs. Mercer: This will be the 24th meeting in program history. ETSU holds an 18-5 all-time record against the Bears.
ETSU vs. The Citadel: This will be the 20th meeting in program history. The Bucs have yet to lose a match against the Bulldogs, as they have a 19-0 record.
A LOOK AT ETSU: ETSU now has sole possession of first place in the SoCon standings. The Bucs are 16-5 overall record and are 5-1 in the SoCon. As a team, ETSU is first in blocks, kills, assists, hitting percentage, as well as holding their opponents to just a .167 hitting percentage. Braedyn Tutton (Courtice, Ontario) is second in the SoCon with a .350 hitting percentage. She also leads the SoCon in blocks. Marija Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia) is first in the SoCon in digs and also ranked sixth nationally in total digs. Leah Clayton (Danville, Va.) is first in the SoCon in kills and is also ranked nationally. She’s 13th in points and 16th in total kills. In overall stats, Alyssa Kvarta (Crown Point, Ind.) is ranked second in the SoCon, behind Samford’s Taylor Anderton. Kvarta is also 11th in the nation in total assists.
A LOOK AT MERCER: Mercer enters Friday’s match with a 9-9 overall record and is 2-5 in the SoCon. They earned their second win last night against The Citadel. Paige Alsten leads the Bears in kills and is also fourth in the SoCon in kills and hitting percentage. Maddie Nunley is also fourth in assists. Alsten and Alexia Morey lead the Bears in blocks and Emilee Wissmach is their libero.
A LOOK AT THE CITADEL: The Citadel comes into Saturday’s match with an 8-10 overall record and 3-4 SoCon record. They lost back-to-back matches against Mercer and Samford, but they do have wins over Chattanooga, Western Carolina, and UNCG. Sharlissa De Jesus is second in the SoCon in kills and third in service aces. Sarah Dobrich has also been an impressive blocker for the Bulldogs throughout the season.
