Defending SoCon Champions Open Season Aug. 30 at Jacksonville State

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (June 27, 2019) -- First-year ETSU volleyball head coach Benavia Jenkins released the Buccaneers’ 2019 schedule on Thursday. 

The defending Southern Conference champions will open the 2019 season playing in the first of four tournaments, beginning August 30-31 at the Jacksonville State Invitational in Jacksonville, Ala. 

“We are very excited to announce the 2019 schedule,” said Jenkins. “We will be faced with great teams in preseason that will make us better. We will have to get comfortable being uncomfortable in tough road environments. We accept the challenges ahead of us and are excited to enjoy the journey together.” 

PRESEASON TOURNAMENTS

The Bucs will play in four preseason tournaments to open the campaign starting in Jacksonville, Ala. at the Jacksonville State Invitational on August 30-31. ETSU will take on host Jacksonville State in the season opener as well as Southeastern Louisiana both on Aug. 30. The Blue and Gold wrap up play in the tournament against Troy on Aug. 31. 

Following the first of two trips to Alabama for tournament play, ETSU heads to the coast for the Carolina Classic, hosted by Coastal Carolina. The Bucs will take the court against SMU and South Carolina State on Sept. 6, before facing the host Chanticleers on Sept. 7. 

ETSU heads back to Alabama the weekend of Sept. 13-14 for the UAB Tournament. The Blue and Gold will see Georgia State and Alcorn State on Sept. 13 and conclude tournament play with UAB on Sept 14. 

The Bucs remain in the Volunteer state to wrap up their fourth and final preseason tournament as ETSU heads down to Knoxville for the Tennessee Classic. ETSU will go for its second straight win over the Vols on Sept. 20, while squaring off with North Dakota State and Georgia Southern on Sept. 21. 

HOME OPENER

Coach Jenkins and the Bucs will make their home debut inside Brooks Gym on October 11 against Wofford. 

ETSU’s remaining home matches include The Citadel (Oct. 12), Furman (Oct. 25), UNCG (Oct. 26), Mercer (Nov. 1), Chattanooga (Nov. 2), Western Carolina (Nov. 13) and Samford – a rematch of last year’s tournament championship – on Nov. 16. 

SOCON OPENER

ETSU begins its SoCon title defense on Sept. 27 when the Blue and Gold open conference play at Furman. The Bucs will then play matches at UNCG (Sept. 28), Chattanooga (Oct. 4) and Mercer (Oct. 5) before making their home opener on Oct. 11. 

The Bucs’ other road conference matches include Western Carolina (Oct. 16), Samford (Oct. 18), The Citadel (Nov. 8) and Wofford (Nov. 9). 

SOCON TOURNAMENT PLAY

The 2019 Southern Conference Tournament will be held at Wofford’s Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium from Nov. 22-24. The champion of the nine-team, single-elimination tournament will receive the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
