Volleyball will play Alcorn State, Georgia State and UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Sept. 12, 2019) – The ETSU volleyball is set for their third preseason tournament as they travel to the UAB Invite to face teams they have not played in more than a decade and one first-time opponent.

Game notes

LAST TIME OUT:  Last weekend, ETSU finished second in the Coastal Carolina Classic. The Bucs were off to a strong start after sweeping both Charleston Southern and SC State. The Blue and Gold found themselves in the first five-set match of the season vs. Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers took the fifth set after a back-and-forth battle, 17-15 to hand ETSU their first loss of the season. Kaela Massey (Brentwood, Tenn.) is coming off of a record-setting weekend setting career-highs in both kills (19 vs Coastal Carolina) and hitting percentage (.684 vs Charleston Southern. The lone senior was also awarded SoCon Offensive Player of the Week. 

SERIES HISTORY:
ETSU vs. Alcorn State: First ever meeting
ETSU vs. Georgia State: ETSU leads 3-2. The Bucs won the last matchup 3-0 in 2007.
ETSU vs. UAB: UAB leads 3-2. The Blazers won the last matchup 3-2 in 2003.  

A LOOK AT ETSU: The Bucs are coming off a regular-season conference championship and the first-ever NCAA at-large bid in SoCon’s history. After losing five starters, the Bucs are looking at a new starting lineup. Top returners feature the lone senior, Massey and reigning back-to-back SoCon Libero of the Year, Marija Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia). ETSU is returning six players overall and welcomes seven freshmen to the squad. Last season, ETSU finished 28-7 overall and 15-1 in conference action. After falling in the 2018 Conference Championship game to Samford, the Bucs received an at-large bid to face Purdue in the NCAA Tournament. In addition to seven freshmen, the Blue and Gold welcome a new coaching staff featuring a new head coach in Benavia Jenkins and assistants Giovanny Delevry and Andrew Pile. The Bucs currently lead the conference in hitting percentage (.305), assists (12.05/s), kills (13.59/s) and blocks (2.41/s).

A LOOK AT ALCORN STATE: Like ETSU, Alcorn State is at the helm of a first-year head coach in Melissa Robinson. Alcorn State is 2-3 this season and is on a three-game losing skid. They have lost nine sets in a row after winning six of their first eight. The Lady Braves are led by Daharri Thompkins who is hitting .231 this season, with 29 kills on 78 attempts. As a team Alcorn St. is hitting .085 with their opponents hitting .238.

A LOOK AT GEORGIA STATE: The Panthers were 7-19 last season and 1-3 in neutral-site matches. Georgia State lost eight players after last season and welcomed seven to the squad. The Panthers are 3-3 with three wins coming in four or five sets. Georgia State averages a .153 attack clip while their opponents are only hitting .161.

A LOOK AT UAB: UAB is coming off a 13-15 2018 season, but returns 10 players from last year, losing six and welcoming six newcomers. UAB is 3-3 this season and is coming off of a lost to Samford. Before the loss, they were on a three-game win streak. The Blazers’ head coach, Amy Pauly is in her second season with the team and second overall as a head coach. UAB is hitting .251 and averages 13.45 kills per set. They are led by Kiana Mack who is hitting .364 this season, she is sixth in their conference in that category.
