Johnson City, Tenn. (Feb. 23, 2002) -- The Davidson Wildcats spoiled Senior Day at East Tennessee State, defeating the Lady Bucs in the regular-season finale, 72-68, Saturday afternoon from Brooks Gym in Johnson City.
The Lady Bucs (10-17, 5-13 Southern Conference) started the game quickly, beginning the contest on a 15-5 run. Davidson (10-17, 6-12 SoCon) came right back, making a 10-2 run of their own to cut the ETSU lead to 17-15 with 10:42 remaining in the first half. The Wildcats would take their first lead, 23-21, after a layup by Davidson forward Bethany Schott with 4:50 left in the first stanza.
The Wildcat lead would grow to as many as eight, 33-25, after a jumper by guard Janna Magette with with 2:11 to go in the first half. But the Lady Bucs would trim the lead back to six, 35-29, at the half.
Davidson maintained a moderate lead for most of the second half, growing to a game-high nine points, 58-49, after a layup by Davidson center Meghan Bryant with 8:37 left in the game. It was that the Lady Bucs would begin a spirited run that would bring them back into the game.
Over the next 1:40, ETSU went on a 13-4 run that tied the game at 62 after a three-pointer by senior guard Leslie Burleson (Buladean, N.C.) with 6:14 left in the game. Schott would respond immeditately, with a three-pointer of her own to put Davidson back up by three. The Lady Bucs took their first lead of the second half, 66-65, after two free throws by Misty Copas (Kingsport, Tenn.) with 3:58 left in the game.
Davidson regained control of the after a jumper by guard Robyn Flewelling that gave the Wildcats a 68-66 lead with 2:13 remaining in the game. Davidson would close the game on a 6-0 run to give them the victory.
The Lady Bucs were led by sophomore forward Lauren Trantham (Asheville, N.C.), who had team highs with 14 points and six rebounds. She also added a game-high three blocked shots. Burleson added 11 points, nine in the second half, all on three-pointers. Copas also scored in double-digits for ETSU, notching 10 points and tying for the team lead with six boards.
Davidson was led by Magette, who tallied a game-high 23 points on 7-13 shooting. It is the second consecutive stellar game for Magette in Brooks Gym, as she scored 28 points in a 70-67 Davidson victory on Jan. 27, 2001. Magette also tied for the. game-high with seven rebounds.
Schott added 16 points for the Wildcats, shooting 6-9 from the floor including 2-2 from three-point range. Bryant added 15 points and tied for the game-high with seven rebounds.
The key stat of the close game was free-throw shooting as the Lady Bucs went 6-7 from the line, and the Wildcats went 16-22.
The Lady Bucs and Wildcats now move on to the Southern Conference Tournament from Charleston, S.C. where they could possibly meet again depending on the outcome of the Chattanooga-Appalachian State game this afternoon. If the Lady Mocs win, the Lady Bucs will be the ninth seed, facing off against the Wildcats Thursday at 5:00 p.m. from McAlister Field House, on the campus of the Citadel. If the Mountaineers are victorious, then the Lady Bucs will be the tenth seed, facing College of Charleston Thursday night in game two, 30 minutes after game one.
