BUIES CREEK, N.C. (March 4, 2006) - The Lady Bucs closed out the regular season slate on Saturday, outrunning Campbell, 56-36, in Carter Gymnasium. ETSU finishes the regular season at 18-9, the most wins since the 1994-95 season, and 14-6 in Atlantic Sun action. The Camels are now 11-17 overall, and 10-10 in conference play.
Candace Gibson (Warner Robins, Ga.) scored a game-high 14 points in the win, to go along with 11 points from both B.J. Banjo (Baltimore, Md.) and Adaeze Azubuike (Lexington, Ky.). Banjo led the Lady Bucs with seven rebounds, while Campbell's Jennifer Lodge posted a game-high 10 boards. Amber Graham paced the Camels with nine points.
After ETSU jumped out to a 6-2 lead by the 18:11 mark, the Lady Camels went on a run of their own, out-scoring the Lady Bucs, 13-2, in the next 7:11 to take the 15-8 lead with 11:00 remaining.
The Lady Bucs responded with a 10-0 run, capped off by a three-point play from Alisha Holmes (Orangeburg, S.C.), which put ETSU up, 18-15. Maggie Rich put an end to the Camel drought by hitting a free throw at the 5:08 mark, but the Lady Bucs continued to pour on the pressure, leading 26-20 heading into the locker room.
ETSU ended the half on an 18-5 run, holding Campbell without a field goal in the half's final 11:00. Gibson led the Lady Bucs with 11 points in the half, followed by Azubuike with seven. Letitia Dickson was the Camel's top scorer with five points.
The Campbell cold streak continued in the second half, as the Camels made only one field goal until the half's 8:09 mark, giving the Camels only two field goals in nearly 23:00. The Lady Bucs took full advantage, out-scoring Campbell, 18-8, in the first 11:36 of the second frame, which led to a 44-28 ETSU advantage with 8:24 to go.
Campbell finished the game at 24.0 percent from the field, on 12-for-50 shooting. CU's 36 points is also the lowest output of the season by an ETSU opponent.
ETSU will trek to Dothan, Ala., for the Atlantic Sun Tournament next week, where the third-seeded Lady Bucs will meet six-seeded Mercer. Play begins on Thursday, March 9, and continues through Saturday, March 11, with the tournament champion securing an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
