JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Jan. 31, 2012) – The Lady Buccaneer women’s basketball team received a late gift after returning back from the holiday break as head coach Karen Kemp announced Tiana Burley (Camilla, Ga.) has transferred to ETSU.
“We are very excited to have Tiana join our program and we expect her to make an immediate impact once she becomes eligible,” said Kemp. “Tiana is a very strong post player who can score from the block, but also shoots the mid-range jumper. She has a nose for the ball and is going to give us some added depth at the post position.”
Burley, a 6-foot-3 center, played one season for the Charlotte 49ers and started taking classes at ETSU once the spring semester began on Jan. 12. The Camilla, Ga. native played in 20 games for the 49ers during her freshman season and averaged 3.9 minutes. Burley scored six points, grabbed four rebounds, and blocked one shot in 11 minutes at North Carolina A&T, and scored the final four points of the first half in the 79-41 win over Savannah State.
Coming out of high school – where she attended Mitchell County – Burley was ranked as the 40th best player in the region according to the Southeastern Hoops Report. As a senior, Burley averaged 20 points, 18 rebounds, and five blocks, while earning honorable-mention McDonald’s All-American honors. Burley, who already had her high school number retired, was named first team All-Region 1 AA honors, along with being tabbed MVP of the 2010 Deep South High School Basketball Classic. During her junior season, Burley posted 13 points, 11 rebounds, and five blocks en route to being named first-team All-Region after guiding Mitchell County to a runner-up finish in the Region I-AA.
Burley will continue practicing with the Lady Bucs this season and becomes eligible to play her first game in an ETSU uniform after the 2012 fall semester. She will have three years of eligibility to use up before the spring of 2015.
“Unfortunately, Tiana won’t be eligible until after the fall semester grades are turned in, but she’s already making her presence felt in practice,” added Kemp. “Tiana has been practicing with us since transferring from Charlotte, so once she can play for us, we are confident she’ll be comfortable playing with her teammates.”
