ETSU gets a season and team-high 19 points from Brianna McQueen
DELAND, Fla. (Jan. 11, 2014) – The ETSU women’s basketball team was unable to end its Sunshine State road trip on a winning note as it dropped a 91-62 decision to the Stetson Hatters on Saturday afternoon inside the Edmunds Center.
With the loss ETSU drops to 5-10 overall and 1-3 in the Atlantic Sun, while Stetson improves to 10-5 on the season and 2-1 in league play.
The Bucs got on the board early with a Cara Bowling (Elizabethton, Tenn.) three-pointer to take a quick 3-0 lead a minute into the game. Stetson then began to convert on opportunities in the paint to gain an advantage. After the Hatters surged ahead by eight points, 24-16, with 10:37 remaining in the first half, ETSU answered with a trifecta by Chandler Christopher (Greeneville, Tenn.) to pull within five. SU responded to the Blue and Gold’s advances by going on a 16-0 run from the 9:17 to 2:45 marks to gain a 40-19 lead with three minutes to go in the half. The Bucs’ offensive struggles and Stetson’s domination in the paint ultimately led to the Hatters leading the Bucs, 45-24, at the break.
As has been the case all season, the Bucs refused to quit and came out of halftime energized, The Blue and Gold started the half with an 8-0 burst to reduce the Hatters’ advantage to 13, 45-32, with 17:06 left to play. Improved offensive play, especially from the three-point line, allowed ETSU to stay in the game but Stetson refused to allow the Bucs to shrink the deficit to single-digits. From the 12:13 to 6:59 marks, SU went on a 19-6 surge to allow it to take complete control of the game, 76-49. Over the duration of the contest, Stetson continued to pour it on to ultimately down ETSU, 91-62.
The Hatters got game-highs of 21 points and six blocks from Amber Porter, while Sasha Sims added 19. Joining the above-stated student-athletes in double-figures for Stetson were Brianti Saunders with 15 and Cherisse Burris with 11. Meanwhile, ETSU got a season and team-high 19 points from Brianna McQueen (Jonesboro, Ga.) as well as 14 points, including three three-pointers, from Bowling.
Stetson scored an opponent season-high 50 points in the paint against the Bucs and shot a stellar 57 percent from the field. The Hatters also added 7-of-13 (54 percent) three-pointers and 16-of-22 (73 percent) free-throws. SU also got 23 points from its bench and outrebounded the Blue and Gold, 46-39.
ETSU really struggled to get any consistent offense going with a 31 percent mark from the floor. The Bucs also hoisted a season-high 28 three-point attempts, making only seven, and knocked down only 7-of-12 free throws. The Blue and Gold was able to turn Stetson over 17 times resulting in 18 points off of these takeaways and converted 19 offensive rebounds into 15 second-chance points. The Bucs also managed to assist on 15 of their 24 made field goals.
The Bucs will continue league play at home when it welcomes the USC Upstate Spartans to Brooks Gym on Sunday, Jan. 19, at 4 p.m.
