Lady Bucs Hold Off UNC Asheville, 78-68

(Dec. 7, 2001) - East Tennessee State placed five players in double figures to hold off UNC Asheville, 78-68 in a non-conference women's college basketball game at Justice Center Friday night. The Lady Bucs were led by freshman guard Ashley Reed's (Barrackville, W.Va.) game-high 17 points. East Tennessee State (4-3) won for the third straight time, while the Bulldogs (0-6) remained winless on the season. The Lady Bucs built a 13-point second half lead only to see UNC Asheville roar back and cut the lead to five with 5:30 left. ETSU built the lead back to 13 at 71-58 with 2:12 only to see the Bulldogs go on a 7-0 run over the next minute to narrow the lead to 71-65 with 1:05 remaining. ETSU got a free throw from Reed and two from Erin Thurman (Hixson, Tenn.) over the next 10 seconds to seal the victory. UNC Asheville was led by junior center Jessica Guarneri with 15 points and 12 rebounds. She only played 29 minutes due to foul trouble. Gillian Murray added 14 points, while junior guard Sherrie Daniels added 13 points and nine rebounds. Freshman forward Ashley Sharpton chipped in 10 points. The Lady Bucs also got 14 points from Misty Copas (Kingsport, Tenn.), while Thurman added 12 points. Megan Jackson (Paris, TN) and Lauren Trantham (Asheville, N.C.) each scored 10 points. Trantham led East Tennessee State with 13 rebounds. The first half had five ties and six lead changes as the Buccaneers rode the hot three-point shooting of Reed to take a 39-36 halftime lead. The freshman guard came of the bench to scoree 14 points as she was 4-of-6 from the three-point line. The Bulldogs stayed with ETSU thanks to Sharpton who scored 10 points and knocked down two long treys. UNCA shot a season-high 50 percent (15-of-30) from the field in the first half. ETSU got the lead to nine at 33-24 but the Bulldogs roared back as they got three straight treys. Two from Sharpton and one from Lindsey Roche to take a 34-32 lead.But Reed sank a trey and scored on a layup to get the Bucs a 39-34 lead. A bucket from Sharpton cut the lead to 39-36. The Ladsy Bucs will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 15 as they play Belmont in the first round of the University of Cincinnati Invitational from Cincinnati, Ohio.
