TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Nov. 25, 2001) - The East Tennessee State Lady Buc basketball team fell to the University of Akron, 72-64 in the consolation game of the Tallahassee Democrat Seminole Classic Sunday afternoon from Tallahassee, Fla.
For the first time this season, the Lady Bucs (1-3) held the advantage at halftime, leading the Zips (1-3) 35-30. Freshman guard Ashley Reed (Barrackville, W.Va.) led ETSU with 15 points at the break on 4-6 shooting and 3-5 from three-point range. Junior guard Samantha Copeland (Evansville, Tenn.) scored nine points in the first stanza.
The Lady Bucs began the second half on an 11-2 run that gave them their biggest lead of the game, 46-32 with 15:37 remaining in the game. Senior forward Megan Jackson (Paris, Tenn.) fueled the run, scoring seven points in that stretch.
Akron then went on a prolonged run of their own, going on a 27-8 run to give the Zips the lead, 57-54, with 6:02 left in the game. Akron would steadily build their lead, reaching double digits at 72-62. ETSU would cut the lead to eight at 72-64, but that was how the game would end.
Reed led the Lady Bucs with 17 points on the night. Sophomore forward Lauren Trantham (Asheville, N.C.) had her first double-double of the season and the third of her career with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Copeland finished with 14 points.
Dominique Harris led Akron with 17 points. Erica Caranfa also finished in double digits for the Zips with 12 points.
The Lady Bucs return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. as they face Radford at home from Memorial Center.
