Lady Bucs gearing up for UNC Greesnboro

Friday, February 20, 2004

GREENSBORO, N.C. (Feb. 20, 2004) -- The East Tennessee State women's basketball team practiced at UNC Greensboro this afternoon in preparation for Saturday's game verus the Spartans. If the Lady Bucs (12-11, 12-5 SoCon) are able to pull off a season sweep of UNC Greensboro (8-16, 8-9 SoCon)then they will also set the school record for conference wins in a season and inch closer to locking up the number three seed heading into the Southern Conference Championships March 3-6. Right now ETSU stands alone at third place in the league standings and has won its last four road games -- something the team hasn't done since the 1999-00 season. The Lady Bucs are coming off a thrilling 74-69 come-from-behind victory at Appalachian State last Saturday, which was also the beginning of their four-game road swing to conclude the regular season. However, finishing strong will be key for the Lady Bucs, who got off to a slow 0-5 start to begin the season. Center Tiffani Mayes (Sumter, S.C.) continues to make a strong case for SoCon Player of the Year. Mayes is the Lady Bucs top scorer at 15.3 ppg. and is the conference's leading rebounder with 9.5 rpg. UNC Greensboro enters Saturday's game tied with Western Carolina for sixth in the SoCon standings. However, eight of the Spartan's SoCon losses have come on the road, making them an impressive 7-1 in Greensboro versus conference opponents. UNCG's last loss in Fleming Gym came over a month ago, 68-55 against Davidson, and head coach Lynne Agee's squad has also pulled out big wins over Furman and Elon. It's no surprise that senior Jacinda Lambert is again the team's leading scorer. Lambert is averaging an even 14.0 ppg. with Amanda Eaton (10.8 ppg.) right behind. Eaton is also a dangerous deep threat and is the league's best free throw shooter, connecting on 85.7 percent of her foul shots. The Spartans will be looking for redemption on Saturday after suffering an 83-72 loss to ETSU in Johnson City back on Dec. 13. The Lady Buc victory halted a five-game losing streak to UNCG, but they still haven't won in Greensboro since the 1999-00 season. Overall, East Tennessee State leads the all-time series, 10-8, while head coach Karen Kemp is 6-8 all-time versus the Spartans. Click HERE for Game Notes.
