Lady Bucs fall to SoCon foe Appalachian State 51-47

BOONE, N.C. (Jan 15, 2005) - The Lady Bucs traveled to Appalachian State University this afternoon in Southern Conference action where the home team proved to much as the Bucs fell 51-47.  With the loss, ETSU falls to 6-9, 4-4 in SoCon play, while the Mountaineers improve to 8-7, 5-3 SoCon.  The Bucs were led by senior forward Tiffani Mayes (Sumter, S.C.) who tallied 15 points and nine rebounds in the loss, while B.J. Banjo (Baltimore, Md.) added 11 points one assist and two steals in the loss. 


ASU held the advantage early on, racing out to an 11-2 lead on the strength of seven quick points from Danielle Edwards. The Mountaineer lead stretched to as much as 11 points in the opening frame on Lindsay Smith's three-pointer at the 9:47 mark. ETSU battled back, however, using 13 ASU turnovers to cut its halftime deficit to 24-18.


The Bucs shot just 25 percent for the game, a season low, while the Mountaineers were slightly better at 32 percent.  ETSU struggled from the charity stripe hitting just 16-27 (59 percent) compared to the 77 percent of the home squad.  Although the Bucs managed 13 steals on 26 Appalachian turnovers, the Mountaineers forced ETSU into 20 turnovers capitalizing with 12 points on five steals for the afternoon.


"Although we didn't win today our team worked very hard to come back from a big deficit early in the game," Lady Bucs head coach Karen Kemp said.  "We need to focus on making better decisions, as well as shooting the ball better from the floor and from the free throw line for us to keep our leads late in the game and finish with the win."


Junior Candace Gibson (Warner Robbins, Ga.) notched a double-double for ETSU with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Mayes, the SoCon's leading scorer entering the contest, scored 14 points adding nine rebounds and two steals for the Bucs.


The Bucs return to action Jan. 20 when they host UNC Greensboro continuing Southern Conference action from Brooks Gymnasium.  Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. with pre-game and play-by-play analysis with Jay Sandos on the Mountain States Health Alliance Buccaneer Sports Network beginning at 6:00 p.m.
