CINCINNATI, Ohio (November 23, 2005) - The East Tennessee State women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Wednesday night, falling to Cincinnati, 82-58, in Fifth Third Arena.  The Lady Bucs fall to 1-1 on the year, while the Bearcats improve to 2-0.

Senior B.J. Banjo (Baltimore, Md.) paced the Lady Bucs with 14 points, while classmate Candace Gibson (Warner Robins, Ga.) added 10 points, and a team-high nine rebounds.  All 10 of Gibson's points came in the second half, while sophomore Kelly Turman (Atlanta, Ga.) poured in a season-high 10.

Cincinnati's Treasure Humphries led all scorers with 19 points, along with eight rebounds, while teammate Anne Stephens added 12.

The Lady Bucs entered the second half at a 25-point disadvantage, but both teams had problems taking care of the ball with the Bearcats turning the ball over seven times in the first eight minutes of the period, while the Lady Bucs gave it away six times.  Turnovers were rampant throughout, with ETSU giving up 22, and CU with 21.

The second half was a better overall effort for the Lady Bucs, who outscored the Bearcats, 37-36, in the closing frame.

ETSU got within 20 with 9:55 to go behind a basket by Banjo and a three-pointer by Michele DeVault (Columbus, Ohio), to put the score at 59-40.  The Bearcats responded with a quick score by Jill Stephens.  Another three from DeVault left the Lady Bucs down 18, but Cincinnati rebounded, extending its lead back to 25 at 68-43.

The Bearcats led 46-21 at the half, behind 14 points from Humphries and 10 from Anne Stephens.  Turman and Banjo paced the Lady Bucs with eight apiece.  Turnovers were the story of the half, as ETSU gave it away 11 times, matching its game total from the previous outing at Mississippi State.  Cincinnati took advantage, scoring 15 points off ETSU miscues.

ETSU started slow, coming up empty in their first nine trips down the floor, and turning the ball over on five possessions.  The Bearcats were also sloppy at the start, committing three early miscues, but got out to the 8-0 lead in the first four minutes.

DeVault finally broke the ice for ETSU, sinking the back end of a pair of free throws, to make the score 13-1.  DeVault added a 10-point effort on the evening. Banjo was the first Lady Buc to sink a field goal, draining a three at the 13:40 mark.  The Bearcats had already increased the margin to double-digits by the second media break, leading 18-8.

The Bearcats kept the pressure on after the breather, with a quick three Humphries and a two-point bucket by Michelle Jones.

Turman gave the Lady Bucs a spark off the bench, hitting a short jumper and making a pair of free throws upon entering the game, but the Bearcats didn't relent, increasing the lead to 26-12, with just under eight minutes to go in the half.

The Lady Bucs will be in action again on Tuesday, Nov. 29, as they host Eastern Kentucky in the 2005-06 home opener.  Game time is slated for 7 p.m. in Memorial Center.
