BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (Jan. 13, 2007) - The ETSU women's basketball team will look to make it a weekend sweep as they take on conference foe Gardner-Webb Saturday afternoon. Tip is set at 2 p.m. inside Paul Porter Arena.
After coming off an 87-66 win Thursday night at Campbell, ETSU (8-7, 4-1) hopes to carry its momentum into Saturday's match-up against the Runnin' Bulldogs. The Lady Bucs had five players reach double figures against the Lady Camels as Siarre Evans (Griffin, Ga.) led all scorers with 20 points. Nichelle Akers (Sumter, S.C.) set a career high with eight assists and senior Brooke Wilhoit (Sevierville) moved into fourth-place on the all-time assists list at ETSU by recording her 342nd career assist. Wilhoit also played in her 100th consecutive game for the Lady Bucs on Thursday night.
Gardner-Webb (5-10, 2-2) won its Atlantic Sun home opener, 52-44, against Kennesaw State on Thursday evening, and has won back-to-back games for the first time this season. The Runnin' Bulldogs are led by Candyse Kelly who is averaging 11.7 points per game, and Shameka Smith who averages 8.6 rebounds a game.
Saturday's match-up brings together the best scoring offense against the best scoring defense. ETSU enters the game averaging 68.9 ppg, while Gardner-Webb is only allowing 58.0 ppg. The Lady Bucs will look to hand Gardner-Webb their first home loss of the season, and its first-ever loss in the series. The Runnin' Bulldogs lead the all-time series, 2-0, after sweeping the season series last season. A win will move ETSU to 4-0 in Atlantic Sun road contests.
