Lady Bucs and Chattanooga clash in regular season opener Friday night
Thursday, November 12, 2009

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 12, 2009) - After averaging 25-point victories in its two exhibition games, the ETSU women's basketball team is set to kick off the 2009-10 campaign Friday night, when the Lady Bucs host instate and former SoCon rival Chattanooga. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside Memorial Center.

The Lady Bucs are coming off a 37-point (96-59) win over King on Saturday afternoon, where senior guard/forward TaRonda Wiles (Danville, Va.) led the way with her second straight 19-point performance. Wiles was one of six Lady Buccaneer players to score in double figures, as the ETSU bench outscored the Tornado - 50 to 9.

Friday night won't be as easy for ETSU, as they look to end a two-game losing streak to Chattanooga - who was selected to win the Southern Conference title for the third straight year. The Lady Mocs, who have shared or won outright the last 10 titles in the league, are led by senior forward Shanara Hollinquest. Hollinquest was selected the preseason favorite for Player of the Year and she was joined on the all-conference team by fellow senior Jenaya Wade-Fray. All-Tournament player, senior Tagan Hatchett, is the third starter returning for the Lady Mocs who went 22-10 overall last year and 17-3 in league play.

Chattanooga defeated Lee in its lone exhibition game, 86-53, last Thursday night inside McKenzie Arena. The Lady Mocs were led by Michelle Davis' 19 points, while Hollinquest added 13 points and nine rebounds in 21 minutes of work.

The last two games in this series have been closely contested; however, Chattanooga has found itself on the winning end both times. The Lady Mocs knocked off ETSU, 70-69, back on Nov. 20, 2007 in Johnson City, when the Lady Bucs were whistled for a questionable push foul with 4.3 seconds on the clock - giving Chattanooga two free throws. Then, last season, Wiles led the Lady Bucs with 27 points, but the Lady Mocs rallied from a 15-point second half deficit to win 77-71 in Chattanooga.

In addition, ETSU students who attend Friday's contest - along with a handful of selected Lady Buccaneer games - will have a chance to win a Nintendo Wii and enter a drawing for a $1,000 cash giveaway, which will be announced at the last regular season game on Feb. 22. Each time ETSU students attend a Lady Buccaneer game, they will have an opportunity to enter the drawing for more chances to win the cash prize at the end of the season against USC Upstate.
