Lady Bucs return to conference play Monday in Macon

Sunday, January 02, 2011

MACON, Ga. (Jan. 2, 2011) - After closing out non-conference play last Wednesday in Charlottesville, Va., the ETSU women's basketball team turns its attention to Atlantic Sun Conference action beginning Monday evening when the Lady Bucs travel to Macon, Ga. to face the Mercer Bears. Tip is set for 5 p.m. inside the University Center.

ETSU (4-7, 1-1) is coming off a split at the Marriott Cavalier Classic as the Blue and Gold defeated Holy Cross by 22 points Tuesday afternoon; however, suffered an 83-66 setback versus host Virginia on Wednesday night. Freshman guard/forward Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 17.5 points and nine rebounds - which included a 15-point, 12-rebound effort against the Cavaliers - marking her third career double-double. In addition to Mitchell, senior captain Tara Davis (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) also had two solid performances in the tournament. Davis, who leads the team in scoring (14.0ppg), scored 16 points and dished out six assists vs. Holy Cross; while closing things out with a team-high 21 points (10-of-12 from the free throw line) against Virginia.

The Lady Bucs were picked second by the league coaches in the preseason conference poll, and ETSU enters A-Sun play with a record of 1-1 after defeating Campbell 76-61 back on Dec. 20. Junior guard Natalie Pickwell (Kingsport, Tenn.) knocked down a career-high six three-pointers and finished with 18 points in the win over the Camels, while Davis added 21 points, five assists and four rebounds inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center. The victory was the 11th straight over Campbell and the 77th conference win (96 tries) for ETSU since joining the A-Sun in 2005-06.

Mercer is currently 1-10, 1-1 in A-Sun play after coming off a 101-44 loss at Georgia Tech last Tuesday night. The Bears were held to only 16 second-half points against the Yellow Jackets, and freshman guard Briana Williams was the lone Bear in double figures as she finished with 12 points. Williams currently leads the team and is tied for second in the A-Sun as she is averaging 15.4 points per game.

The Bears' lone win on the year is a 69-56 victory at Belmont back on Dec. 2.

The Lady Bucs have won the last three meetings against Mercer, and ETSU holds a slight 10-9 lead in the series. The Lady Bucs are also returning to familiar grounds as ETSU won three games inside the University Center last March to capture their third straight A-Sun Tournament title. Overall, the Lady Bucs have won four straight inside Mercer's home arena.

Fans unable to make the trip to Macon can listen to all the action as Voice of the Bucs Jay Sandos will carry the play-by-play live on WXSM-AM 640 The Sports Monster. The game will also be broadcast live on A-Sun.TV.
