Davis named Player of the Week; Mitchell tabbed Newcomer of the Week

MACON, Ga. (Jan. 4, 2011) - Senior Tara Davis (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and freshman Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) were key pieces in the Lady Bucs' two victories this past week, and on Tuesday afternoon the ETSU scholar-athletes were recognized for their efforts as they swept the Atlantic Sun Weekly honors. Davis was named Player of the Week and Mitchell was tabbed Newcomer of the Week.

Davis helped guide the Lady Bucs to a pair of wins in three tries this week as she exploded for 20 points, five assists, and 2.7 rebounds in 31.7 minutes of action in those three contests. The Murfreesboro, Tenn. native also knocked down an astonishing 56.3 percent of her shots from beyond the arc - going 9-of-16 - as well as tying her career high with a 5-of-9 effort in the 15-point win at Mercer Monday night. Davis began the week with 16 points, six assists, and four rebounds in the 90-68 win versus Holy Cross in the first round of Marriott Cavalier Classic on Tuesday, Dec. 28. Then, the following night, Davis poured in 21 points (10-of-12 at the free throw line) and dished out four assists in the 83-66 loss at Virginia in the championship game. Davis continued burning down the nets Monday evening in Macon as her 23-point, 4-assist effort helped guide the Lady Bucs past Mercer, 83-68. Davis' 23 points at Mercer marked her sixth 20-plus point performance this year, which leads all players in the A-Sun. In addition to her solid shooting stats, Davis shot 81 percent at the free throw line (17-21) for the week.

This marks the third career player of the week honor for the nursing major and the second this season.

Meanwhile, Mitchell picked up her second piece of hardware in as many days. Mitchell, who averaged 19.0 points and 10.0 rebounds for the week, was also named to the Marriott Cavalier Classic All-Tournament Team after recording 17.5 points and nine rebounds in two games in Charlottesville. Mitchell kicked the week off with a team-high 20 points, six rebounds and four assists in the victory over Holy Cross. On Wednesday, in the Marriott Cavalier Classic Championship, the Bluffton, Ga. native finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds against Virginia. Mitchell then rang in the New Year with a bang after registering her fourth career double-double (second straight) at Mercer. The freshman sensation tallied 22 points, 12 rebounds, and three assists in the win over the Bears. For the week, Mitchell also shot 51 percent from the field (25-49) and 7-of-8 from the free throw line.

Like Davis, this marks the second weekly award for Mitchell - who is currently majoring in criminal justice.

Davis and Mitchell look to guide the Lady Bucs to a Georgia sweep as ETSU gears up to take on Kennesaw State Wednesday evening. Tip is scheduled for 5 p.m. inside the KSU Convocation Center.
