MACON, Ga. (Jan. 11, 2011) - Freshman Lady Buccaneer standout Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) was a double-double machine this past week against a pair of conference opponents, and the Bluffton, Ga. native was honored with her dominating performances as she received her second straight Atlantic Sun Newcomer of the Week award, announced the league office Tuesday afternoon.
Mitchell, who had to overcome adversity during the week, continued to impress the Lady Buccaneer faithful as she averaged 15.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals in wins against Stetson and Kennesaw State. The Bluffton, Ga. native received news that her grandmother passed away last Tuesday, but Mitchell still managed to record back-to-back double-doubles and shoot 48 percent from the field (12-25) in 41.5 minutes of play.
Despite learning the news about her grandmother the day before, Mitchell lit the Owls up for 18 points and 12 rebounds in the 73-61 victory at Kennesaw State Wednesday night. Then, after missing the FGCU game to be with her family in Georgia, Mitchell returned to the starting line-up and played all 45 minutes in the 78-74 overtime victory against Stetson Monday night inside the MSHA Athletic Center. Mitchell recorded 13 points and 11 rebounds, while shooting 50 percent from the floor (5-10) against the Hatters.
This marks the third award for the Criminal Justice major and she is one of two Lady Buccaneer players to receive A-Sun honors this season.
Mitchell and the Lady Bucs return to action this weekend when ETSU visits Jacksonville on Saturday afternoon. Tip is set for 1 p.m. inside Veterans Memorial Arena.
