JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Jan. 28, 2011) - The two hottest teams in the Atlantic Sun are set to clash inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center Saturday afternoon when the Lady Bucs host Kennesaw State in league action. Tip is set for 1:30 p.m. Following the women's game, the Buccaneer men face Kennesaw State at 4:30.
ETSU and Kennesaw State are tied with the longest current winning streaks in league play as both clubs have won three straight. The Lady Bucs are coming off a 64-42 victory over USC Upstate Wednesday night where ETSU made history in more ways than one. Not only did the Blue and Gold set a school record with their 75 rebounds, but red-shirt senior post Latisha Belcher (Martinsville, Va.) became the 18th player in Lady Buccaneer history to reach the one-thousand point club. Belcher finished with three points, moving her career point total to the round number of 1,000, but she also set a personal best with 16 rebounds against the Spartans. Meanwhile, it also marked the first time since Jan. 9, 1982 where ETSU held back-to-back opponents to less than 50 points in consecutive wins.
With Belcher joining the prestigious grouping on Wednesday, fellow senior Tara Davis (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) looks to join 1,000-point club Saturday against the Owls. Davis, who is only 11 points shy of 1,000, is also seven assists away of 400 for her illustrious career. Should the Murfreesboro, Tenn. native reach both milestones, Davis would become only the third player in ETSU history to accomplish both feats - joining Kim Skala (1,079 points/841 assists) and Angie Fickes (1,109 points/422 assists).
After dropping its first seven conference games to begin the season, Kennesaw State (6-12, 3-7) is riding high as the Owls have gone on to knock off Jacksonville, North Florida and Mercer.
Since A-Sun play began last month, Angie Smith, Sametria Gideon and Ashley Holiday have all been averaging double figures in scoring against conference foes. Smith is leading the way with 13.4 points in ten league games, but Holiday has been heating up over the last few games. Holiday matched a school record with nine three-pointers in Kennesaw State's 79-56 win over Mercer Wednesday night. Along with Holiday's 29-point performance, Gideon followed that up with 17 points and 17 rebounds.
A familiar face will be on the visiting bench Saturday afternoon as former Lady Buccaneer standout Brooke Wilhoit (2004-07) is now in her first year as an assistant coach at Kennesaw State. Wilhoit, who helped guide the Lady Bucs to the 2007 WNIT, ranks second all-time in assists (445) and ranked 12th in the NCAA in assists per game (5.9) in 2007. The Sevierville, Tenn. native played in 117 games, averaging 6.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.8 steals per game for the Blue and Gold.
Saturday marks the 11th all-time meeting between ETSU and Kennesaw State, with the Lady Bucs winning all ten prior contests. Most recently, the Lady Bucs defeated Kennesaw State, 73-61, back on Jan. 5 inside the KSU Convocation Center. Junior guard Natalie Pickwell (Kingsport, Tenn.) tied a career high with 21 points, while Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) recorded a double-double - finishing with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Five of the previous ten meetings have been decided by ten points or less, with three of those games being played in Johnson City.
ETSU students who attend Saturday's game have the chance to sign up and register for the chance to win $50 cash. The winner will be announced during the second half and they have to be in attendance to be eligible for the prize. Also, students who sign up at every home game will have a chance to win a prize pack at the end of the season.
Saturday is also American Heroes Day meaning all police, fire, EMS, security, and US Military personnel all get in for a BUC ($1) with proper ID.
Fans unable to make the trip to the Dome can listen to all the action on WXSM-AM 640 as Voice of the Lady Bucs John Stevens will carry the play-by-play. Live video streaming will also be available on A-Sun.TV, while live stats will be offered via Gametracker.
