ETSU, FGCU set to clash on CSS Monday night
Sunday, February 06, 2011
FORT MYERS, Fla. (Feb. 6, 2011) - The top two teams in the Atlantic Sun Conference will square off live on CSS Monday night when the Lady Bucs take on league-leading Florida Gulf Coast inside Alico Arena. Tip is slated for 7:05 p.m.
ETSU (14-9, 11-3), who has won a season-high six straight games, is coming off an 80-62 victory over Stetson on Saturday afternoon in DeLand. Despite seeing their 21-point second-half lead cut to eight with 3:32 remaining, the Lady Bucs responded by closing out the final two minutes on a 10-0 run to capture the 18-point win. Freshman Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) recorded her tenth double-double of the year - finishing with 20 points and 11 rebounds. The Lady Bucs' starting five all scored in double figures and ETSU scored 25 points off 25 Hatter turnovers.
The Lady Bucs are outscoring their opponents by 23.7 points per game during this six-game winning streak, which is also the longest current stretch in the A-Sun. Mitchell is averaging 16.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in the last six games; while senior captain Tara Davis (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) is posting 13.0 points, 4.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.7 steals in her last six outings.
Defeating the Eagles won't be an easy task as FGCU (18-1, 11-1) has won 33 straight games home, marking the third longest streak in the country. FGCU's last home loss occurred on Jan. 8, 2009 when the Lady Bucs knocked off the Eagles, 75-67.
The Eagles extended their home winning streak with a 70-59 win over USC Upstate on Saturday night. Courtney Chihil scored a career-high 22 points, while FGCU - who leads the country with 10.9 threes per game - were limited to only 6-of-23 from long range.
FGCU currently holds a 4-2 series lead and the Eagles have won two straight, including a 77-70 win over ETSU last month in Johnson City. Five of the six games in the series have been decided by eight points or less.
The Lady Bucs trail the Eagles by two games in the conference standings.
Monday's game will be regionally televised on CSS as Matt Stewart will handle the play-by-play and Dee Romine will be the color analyst. The game will also be aired live on ASun.TV, while live stats will be offered via FGCUEagles.com.
