ETSU women’s basketball wraps up preseason play Monday night

Sunday, November 06, 2011

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 6, 2011) – Coming off a 12-point win over Carson-Newman in its preseason opener last Thursday, the ETSU women’s basketball team will close out the exhibition season on Monday night as the Lady Bucs host King College. Tip is slated for 7 p.m. inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center.

Senior Natalie Pickwell (Kingsport, Tenn.) led the Blue and Gold with a game-high 21 points against the Eagles, while a pair of Lady Buccaneer players recorded double-doubles in the 62-49 win over Carson-Newman. Junior post Tosha Austin (Chattanooga, Tenn.) finished with 14 points and 18 rebounds and sophomore guard/forward Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) added 12 points and 13 rebounds in her first game back after suffering a season-ending knee injury last February. As a team, ETSU out-rebounded Carson-Newman by 19, 58 to 39, while the Lady Bucs scored 19 points off 30 Eagle turnovers.

Monday marks the final tune up before the Lady Bucs tip off their regular season when Tennessee Tech comes to town for the Preseason WNIT on Friday, Nov. 11.

Meanwhile, King will be playing its first game of the 2011-12 season under first-year head coach Josh Thompson.

The Tornado finished the 2010-11 campaign with a 14-18 record, while graduating four seniors which made up 54-percent of King’s scoring offense a year ago. King averaged 64.7 points per game and junior guard Brooke Johnson returns as the team’s leading scorer after totaling 8.4 points and 2.9 rebounds per contest for the Tornado.

Last season the Lady Bucs defeated King, 80-67, behind Tara Davis’ (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) 20-point effort. Mitchell also added 15 points and seven rebounds and Gwen Washington (Manassas, Va.) contributed with 13 points. ETSU managed to score 33 points off 31 King turnovers, and the Lady Bucs also received a strong backing from the bench as the reserves totaled 32 points.

Fans unable to make the trip to Johnson City can listen to all the action as “Voice of the Lady Bucs” John Stevens will handle the play-by-play duties on WXSM-AM 640 The Extreme Sports Monster. Monday’s game will also be broadcast live on A-Sun.TV, while live stats will be offered via Gametracker.

The first 100 students who attend Monday’s game will receive a special ETSU T-shirt.
