Lady Bucs host MTSU on Saturday afternoon

Friday, November 25, 2011

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 25, 2011) – After playing its last three games away from Johnson City, the ETSU women’s basketball team returns to the MSHA Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon when the Lady Bucs host Middle Tennessee State. Tip is set for 1:30 p.m.

ETSU (0-4) had a turbulent road trip as the Blue and Gold went winless in their three game swing against UAB, Manhattan, and Appalachian State. The winless start for the Lady Bucs marks their longest stretch without a win to start a season since dropping the first five games to begin the 2003-04 campaign.

Turnovers haunted the Lady Bucs on the road as ETSU turned the ball over 28 times per game, which resulted in 29.3 points per game for the opposition. In addition to the turnovers, the Lady Buccaneer offense has been held in check – averaging only 55.0 points per game in their last three games. However, senior guard Natalie Pickwell (Kingsport, Tenn.) broke out of her slow start after scoring 23 points and going 4-of-7 from beyond the arc against Appalachian State on Monday night in Boone. Joining Pickwell with the hot hand is freshman guard Brianna Bogard (Georgetown, Texas). Bogard is averaging 10.3 points in her last three outings, while shooting 46.2 percent (6-13) from beyond the arc this season.

Middle Tennessee State (3-2) is coming off a 74-55 win over Tennessee Tech on Wednesday night in Murfreesboro. The Blue Raiders were led by Ebony Rowe’s 20-point, 8-rebound effort, while Kortni Jones added 15 points, seven steals, and five assists in 40 minutes of work. MTSU forced the Golden Eagles to turn the ball over 33 times and totaled 21 steals.

The Blue Raiders are currently ranked No. 12 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll and are also receiving one vote in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches Poll. MTSU was picked to win the East Division in the Sun Belt Preseason Coaches Poll, while Rowe was selected Preseason co-Player of the Year.

MTSU has won the last four meetings in the series and 18 of the 21 games overall, including an 87-71 win over the Lady Bucs last season in Murfreesboro.

Fans unable to make the trip to Johnson City can listen to all the action as “Voice of the Lady Bucs” John Stevens will handle the play-by-play duties on WXSM-AM 640 The Extreme Sports Monster. Saturday’s game will also be broadcast live on A-Sun.TV, while live stats will be offered via Gametracker.
