Lady Bucs return home Tuesday night to face Morehead State
Monday, December 19, 2011
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Dec. 19, 2011) – After traveling over 4,300 miles on its season-long five-game road swing, the ETSU women’s basketball team finally returns home as the Lady Bucs host Morehead State on Tuesday night. Tip is set for 7 p.m. inside the MSHA Athletic Center.
ETSU (0-10) – who hasn’t played since Dec. 11 when the Blue and Gold faced then No. 18 North Carolina in Chapel Hill – hopes returning home is what they need to pick up their first win of the season. Despite dropping its first 10 games to start the year, ETSU has plenty to build off over the last two games, while playing on their home court is something the Lady Bucs have done well over the last few seasons.
The Lady Bucs entered the season with an eight-game home winning streak inside the Dome, but a season-opening loss to Tennessee Tech in the Preseason WNIT snapped the streak back on November 11. However, the Lady Bucs have still won 20 of their last 24 home games, including a perfect 11-0 mark back in 2009-10.
During the road swing red-shirt senior guard Tarita Gordon (Wichita, Kan.) scored in double figures in three of the five games, while sophomore Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) averaged 10.4 points and 8.8 rebounds along with shooting 51.0 percent (25-49) from the field. In addition to those two, fellow sophomore guard Shawn Randall (Orlando, Fla.) also finished the road trip strong. Randall is coming off a season-high 16-point performance at North Carolina and also scored 10 points at Missouri State back on Dec. 6.
With the Lady Bucs having a little over a week lay-off between games, Morehead State (3-8) is fresh off its 75-69 win over Robert Morris on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles outscored Robert Morris by six in the first half and both teams scored 34 points in the final 20 minutes as Morehead State secured its first win since defeating Wright State on Dec. 2.
The Eagles – who are 0-5 away from home this season – have three players scoring in double figures as senior guard Linda Dixon leads the way with 14.4 points per game. Meanwhile, junior forward Ashar Harris is averaging a double-double through her first 11 games of the season (10.5 points/11.5 rebounds) and senior guard Courtney Lumpkin is registering 10.6 points and 3.2 assists per contest. As a team, Morehead State has made 46 more threes than its opponents – 88 to 42 – while Dixon is averaging 2.6 treys per game.
Morehead State leads the all-time series 4-3, but the Lady Bucs won the last meeting, 96-83, back on Dec. 4, 1990 in Johnson City.
