Come celebrate Bucky’s Birthday Saturday afternoon

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Jan. 20, 2012) – The ETSU women’s basketball team returns to action Saturday afternoon when the Lady Bucs host Lipscomb inside the MSHA Athletic Center. Tip is set for 1:30 p.m.

Despite having their eight-game home conference winning streak come to an end Thursday night against Belmont, the Lady Bucs (4-14, 3-5 A-Sun) have still won 37 of the last 42 home games against A-Sun foes.

ETSU was led by its underclassmen against the Bruins as freshmen Cara Bowling (Elizabethton, Tenn.) and Maria Bond (Macon, Ga.) each contributed with career-high 16-point efforts, while sophomore Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) added 13 points and nine rebounds. The Lady Bucs fought but couldn’t get over the hump as ETSU cut a 17-point second half deficit to two (63-61) with five minutes to play; however, Belmont outscored the Blue and Gold, 25-14, down the stretch to capture the 88-75 win.

While the underclassmen were producing on the hardwood, the senior trio of Natalie Pickwell (Kingsport, Tenn.), Tarita Gordon (Wichita, Kan.) and Gwen Washington (Manassas, Va.) combined for 10 points on 3-of-12 shooting. Pickwell, who started the last 48 straight games for ETSU, came off the bench and didn’t attempt a shot, while Gordon managed to only score six points on 1-of-8 shooting in 18 minutes off the bench. Meanwhile, Washington fouled out in 16 minutes of action and finished with four points.

Should the Blue and Gold want to keep their 11-game winning streak intact against Lipscomb (3-16, 1-7), ETSU will need a total team effort on Saturday.

The Lady Bisons have lost their last six games including a 73-66 setback Thursday night at USC Upstate. Lipscomb’s Anna Bowers reached the 1,000-point club in the loss after finishing with 19 points on 4-of-9 shooting from three, while Hannah Phillips was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and added 14 points.

Bowers and Phillips are both averaging 14.1 points per game in eight A-Sun games, while Lipscomb is averaging 65 points per game. Phillips is also shooting 51.3 percent (39-76) from the field and Bowers is netting 2.5 threes per outing.

Last season the Lady Bucs knocked off Lipscomb three straight times, including an 83-75 win in the quarterfinals of the A-Sun Tournament in Macon. Overall, ETSU has won all six games played in Johnson City, while its lone loss was a 57-52 defeat back on Feb. 3, 2007 in Nashville. Since then, the Lady Bucs have rattled off 11 straight against the Purple and Gold on average of 18.1 points per game.

Fans who attend the Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader can be a part of Bucky’s Birthday as children receive free admission and free cupcakes.

Fans unable to make the trip to Johnson City can listen to all the action on WXSM-AM 640 The Extreme Sports Monster as “Voice of the Lady Bucs” John Stevens will carry the play-by-play. Live video will also be available via A-Sun.TV, while live stats will be offered on GameTracker.
