MACON, Ga. (Feb. 26, 2012) – After putting up impressive numbers against A-Sun foes for over a month now, sophomore guard/forward Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) has finally landed Atlantic Sun Player of the Week honors, announced the league office on Sunday evening.
Mitchell – who averaged 16.8 points and 11.9 rebounds while shooting over 60 percent from the field in her final 11 A-Sun games this year – saved one of her best performances for the last game of the regular season.
The Lady Buccaneer standout became the first player in the A-Sun this season to record 20 points and 20 rebounds in a game, while also becoming the first since two-time conference player of the year, Siarre Evans, accomplished the feat back on Jan. 9, 2010. Mitchell exploded for a game-high 23 points (9-of-17 shooting) and a career-high 20 rebounds along with forcing a season-best four steals against league-leading Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday afternoon inside the MSHA Athletic Center.
Mitchell began the week with yet another double-double, finishing with a 10-point, 14-rebound effort in the 74-72 win over Stetson on Thursday night in Johnson City. The Bluffton, Ga. native – who has 10 double-doubles on the year – has registered seven double-doubles in her last nine games, including three consecutive to end the regular season.
For the week, Mitchell averaged 16.5 points and 17 rebounds, while shooting exactly 50 percent (13-26) from the field in two games.
The criminal justice major – who captured three A-Sun Newcomer of the Week and one Player of the Week honors as a freshman – picked up her first weekly award in the final selection this season.
Mitchell and the Lady Bucs now gear up for a rematch with No. 1 seed Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday afternoon in the first A-Sun Quarterfinal game. Tip is set for noon inside Mercer’s University Center.
