HIGH POINT, N.C. (Nov. 10, 2012) – Despite a 26-point performance by junior Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga), ETSU women’s basketball team dropped its season opener, 85-76, to High Point Saturday afternoon in the Millis Center.

Mitchell scored 16 of her 26 points in the first-half as she shot 8-10 from the field. Freshman guard Brianna McQueen (Jonesboro, Ga.) netted 19 points while nine points came from the charity stripe and added a team-high four assists and six rebounds. Redshirt-sophomore Serena Clark (Tucker, Ga.) scored all 11 of her points in the second-half and registered five rebounds and two steals.

High Point was led by Erin Reynolds and Cheyenne Parker who combined for 52 points. Reynolds recorded a double-double with 11 assists and 24 points.  Parker scored a game-high 28 points and 13 rebounds to earn a double-double.

Reynolds and Parker were responsible for nine of HPU’s first 12 points as the Panther took a 12-9 lead with 12:25 left in the first-half. The Lady Bucs came surging back to score nine unanswered points, 18-12, to a get their biggest lead of the game with just over nine minutes to go in the half.  HPU managed to tie the game up at 29-29 on a three-point play by Parker at the 4:07 mark.  The Panthers took a 43-37 lead into halftime by going 5-10 from beyond the arc and 10-11 from the free throw line.

ETSU came out strong out of halftime to tie the game up, 47-47, at the 15:58 mark help of six points by Mitchell.  High Point responded with three-pointer by Kendra Wallace who drained a game-high four three-pointers.  The Lady Bucs weren’t able to get within two points the rest of the game as HPU took its largest lead of the game, 70-60, with 6:35 left to play. ETSU was able to get within striking distance by cutting HPU’s lead to four with just over three minutes left.  But the Lady Bucs weren’t able to get another stop in the final three minutes as High Point went to score on four of its last five possessions to seal the 85-76 victory.

The Lady Bucs look to bounce back when they take on Chattanooga on Nov 17 in McKenzie Arena at 7:30 p.m.
