Lady Bucs and Tigers to meet for the first time since 2000
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 29, 2012) – The ETSU women’s basketball team will square off with Memphis for the first time in 12 years on Friday inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center at 7 p.m.
ETSU (0-2) will be looking to avoid back-to-back 0-3 starts for the first time in program history. The Lady Bucs are already off to a second consecutive 0-2 start for the first time since the 2002-03 and 2003-04 campaigns. Despite those numbers, ETSU has been led by the great numbers put up by Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.), who is averaging 20.5 points. Mitchell put up 26 points in the season opening loss at High Point, and most recently put in a 15-point effort in the loss to Chattanooga. She also leads the Atlantic Sun Conference in points per game, as well as field goal percentage (58.6 percent), free throw percentage (87.5 percent) and steals (3.5 per game). Mitchell also ranks third in the league in offensive rebounds, averaging 4.0 per game.
Just behind Mitchell in terms of points through the early going is newcomer Brianna McQueen (Jonesboro, Ga.). In two games, McQueen is averaging double figures at 11.0 points, which includes an 18-point performance in her first ever collegiate game at High Point. McQueen also averages 4.5 rebounds.
Redshirt sophomore Serena Clark (Tucker, Ga.) enters Friday as ETSU’s leading rebounder, averaging 5.5 boards after grabbing six against the Lady Mocs. Clark is also among the A-Sun’s top five in offensive rebounds, averaging 3.5 per contest.
Scouting the Tigers
Memphis (3-2) is coming off its first home loss of the season, falling to Prairie View A&M, 70-58, on Sunday. The Tigers dropped just one game at Elma Roane Fieldhouse all of last year, losing to Southern Miss, 62-54, in early February. Prior to the A&M loss, Memphis had defeated Texas-Arlington and Illinois State on the road. The Illinois State game was part of the Preseason WNIT, where Memphis also defeated Grambling State and lost to MTSU.
Nicole Dickson leads the way for the Tigers, averaging 22.0 points through the first five games. The 2009 graduate of Greeneville High School is 42-of-85 (49.4 percent) from the field, and has 14 makes on 33 attempts (42.4 percent) from long distance this season. The 6-foot senior is also the team’s leading rebounder, averaging 7.2 boards per contest.
ETSU’s Last Outing
The Lady Bucs last stepped onto the playing court a little less than two weeks ago at Chattanooga, and were handed their worst defeat in nearly a year, 81-48. After scoring the first basket of the game, ETSU witnessed the Lady Mocs go on a 21-4 run to trail by 15 at the 11:29 mark. UTC extended the lead to as much as 24 in the opening frame, and ultimately took a 22-point cushion into break – ETSU’s worst halftime deficit since Feb. 4, 2010 when it trailed FGCU by 27.
The momentum didn’t change into the second half, as the Lady Mocs continued their hot shooting and took a 35-point lead with just over six minutes remaining. Meghan Downes led the charge, scoring a game-high 24 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Chattanooga shot 46.6 percent on the night, including an impressive 11-of-22 clip from three-point range, and held ETSU to just 29.9 percent from the field (20-67) while forcing 20 Lady Buc turnovers.
Through all of that, Mitchell was still a bright spot for ETSU. The junior guard scored a team-high 15 points (6-14 FG) and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
The statewide rivalry dates back to the 1975-76 season, but has not been played since November of 2000 when Memphis dropped the Lady Bucs, 90-48, in the Memphis Thanksgiving Classic. ETSU trails the all-time series 2-8, but won the last meeting in Johnson City, 73-72, over 30 years ago in the 1981-82 season.
Live video of Friday night’s contest will be available for free on ASun.TV, and live audio can be found on ETSUBucs.com or by listening to 640-WXSM, The Xtreme Sports Monster, on your AM radio. Live stats will be provided through Stat Broadcast on ETSUBucs.com.
