Put together back-to-back wins for the second time this season
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 2, 2013) – Continued offensive efficiency and solid defense allowed ETSU to race out to a 13-0 lead and it never looked back, topping the Lipscomb Lady Bisons, 86-64, on Saturday afternoon inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletics Center.
With the win, ETSU improves to 6-11 overall and 4-6 in Atlantic Sun play, while Lipscomb drops to 2-18 overall and 1-9 in league action.
“I can smile after this one,” ETSU head coach Karen Kemp said. “I think that the work we have put in for the past few months is finally starting to pay off. I felt like defensively, this may have been one of our best showings. This team has a great attitude and I think that has been the difference the past few weeks. They have a positive attitude and they come into practice every day and work very hard and I think we are seeing the results of their hard work.”
Similar to the win against Jacksonville, ETSU came out of the gates strong and scored the first 13 points of the contest and went on a 15-2 run before the first media timeout with 15:06 left in the half. The Lady Bucs held the Lady Bisons scoreless for nearly five minutes and contained them under double-digits until seven minutes remained in the period. After a 25-point Lady Bucs advantage was achieved with eight minutes remaining in the stanza, LU fought back to close the deficit to 13 points with two minutes remaining. The Blue and Gold followed with a 4-0 run to end the half and ballooned the advantage to 17, 45-28. Forty-five points is the most the Lady Bucs have scored in the first half of a game this season.
Throughout the second half, the Lady Bucs were able to maintain a large lead, increasing it to as many as 25 points with 15:21 remaining. Lipscomb did not quit though, and carved into the deficit, getting down by as few 12 points with nine minutes left in the contest. ETSU answered with a 17-9 run over the final five minutes, sealing the game in the Lady Bucs’ favor, 86-64. The 22-point triumph is the largest margin of victory this season for ETSU and the 86 points are a season-high for points scored in a contest. This second consecutive victory marks the second time the Blue and Gold have strung together back-to-back wins since downing Memphis and Morehead State on Nov. 30 and Dec. 2.
ETSU got a team-high 16 points and a game-high seven steals from Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) in only 18 minutes of play due to injury. Cara Bowling (Elizabethton, Tenn.) chipped in 13 points, while Serena Clark (Tucker, Ga.) added 10 points, five rebounds and four assists. Meanwhile, LU guard Hannah Phillips scored a game-high 18 points, while Kelli Smith and Presley Stastny each produced eight points.
Shooting 44 percent from the field and 58 percent from the three-point line, the Lady Bucs also shot 70 percent from the free throw line and once again outrebounded their opponent, grabbing 50 boards compared to only 32 for Lipscomb. ETSU led in virtually every statistical category; including points in the paint (36-16), points off turnovers (29-14), second chance points (17-2) off of 21 offensive rebounds, fast break points (8-4) and bench points (34-25).
Meanwhile, Lipscomb shot 35 percent from the floor and an even worse 30 percent from behind the arc. The Lady Bisons were able to cash in from the charity stripe, knocking down 86 percent (18-of-21) of their attempts, but turned the ball over 24 times.
The Lady Bucs conclude the homestand when they welcome the Northern Kentucky Norse to the ETSU/MSHA Athletics Center on Monday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. Click here for tickets.
