Experienced cast of players return for the Buccaneers
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 1, 2013) – The ETSU women’s basketball team will kickoff the 2013-14 season Saturday with an exhibition matchup versus Shepherd University at 1:30 p.m. inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletics Center. The contest will be the Buccaneers’ first under first-year head coach Brittney Ezell.
Following a disappointing 2012-13 campaign, the new-look Bucs will look to start fresh under an entirely new coaching staff. Though the coaches have changed, the veteran faces on the floor have not. The preseason pick to finish fifth in the Atlantic Sun conference returns a solid group of veteran players that have logged many minutes for ETSU the past few seasons. The Bucs return four starters and nine letterwinners from the 2012-13 squad. Among the returnees are six players who started 10 or more games last season.
Highlighted among the returnees is last year’s team-leading scorer and rebounder Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) who led the way with 11.5 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. The preseason all-conference selection is backed by juniors Cara Bowling (Elizabethton, Tenn.) and Tiana Burley (Camilla, Ga.) who each averaged 9.5 points per game last season and were also ETSU’s leaders in three-point shooting and field goal percentage, respectively. The Bucs also added three freshmen guards who will try to help bolster the backcourt for the Blue and Gold.
ETSU welcomes Shepherd University from Shepherdstown, W.Va. to the Dome. The Division II school and member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) is coached by first-year head coach Toni West. This will be the first-ever meeting between the Bucs and the Rams.
