A second-consecutive double-double from Serena Clark was not enough to lift the Buccaneers

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 21, 2013) – A 14-2 Morehead State run over the final four minutes of the game proved to be too much for ETSU as the Eagles pulled away to down the Buccaneers, 77-69, on Thursday evening inside the Freedom Hall Civic Center. The contest was the first game of the First Bank and Trust Company Roundball Showcase.

With the loss ETSU drops to 1-2 overall on the young season, while Morehead State improves to 4-2 on the year.

The Buccaneers got off to a slow start in Freedom Hall, falling behind by as many eight points four minutes into the game. The Bucs responded with an 11-2 run over the next five minutes to take a 11-10 lead with roughly 12 minutes remaining in the first half. Morehead State fought back to take the lead and went on a 10-1 burst over the next three minutes to take a 21-14 advantage with nine minutes left. The two teams traded baskets for much of the remainder of the half before ETSU scored four points in the final 47 seconds of the period, capped by a driving and-one conversion by Shawn Randall (Orlando, Fla.), to close the gap to 37-34 at the break.

Over the first six minutes of the second period, Morehead State increased its lead to as many as eight points, but the Bucs answered with a surge to tie the game at 55 with 10:50 remaining. After back and forth action the next two minutes, the Eagles began to take control as the Blue and Gold struggled to find a rhythm on offense and sent Morehead State to the free-throw line to increase its lead. The Bucs showed life after a Maria Bond (Macon, Ga.) lay-in inched ETSU closer, 67-63, with 3:57 left, but the Eagles’ ability to get in the lane and capitalize from both the field and the charity stripe doomed ETSU as MSU held on for a 77-69 victory.

The Morehead State Eagles featured three double-figure scorers including a game-high 20 from Terrice Robinson and 14 from both Almesha Jones and Shanice Parker. Meanwhile for ETSU, Serena Clark (Stone Mountain, Ga.) notched her second-consecutive double-double with 12 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Chandler Christopher (Greeneville, Tenn.) followed her career night at Appalachian State with another double-digit scoring performance of 15 points, while Brianna McQueen (Jonesboro, Ga.) joined the in double-figure scorers with 12 points and a career-high six assists.

Shooting 45 percent from the field and 44 percent from long range, the Morehead State Eagles capitalized the most from the charity stripe by knocking down 16-of-21 free throws. MSU cashed in even more with 24 points off of 16 ETSU turnovers which proved to be one of the differences in the game.

Meanwhile, ETSU shot a solid 50 percent from the field but struggled from downtown, knocking down only 4-of-11 from behind the arc. The Bucs did hit the boards hard with a 36-27 rebounding advantage and dominated the Eagles in the paint, 36-24. ETSU’s reserves also provided a spark with 23 points off the bench.

The Bucs have a quick turnaround and will return to action at home, this time inside Brooks Gym where they will face the St. Francis (Pa.) Red Flash on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
